February 24, 2009

A WOMAN who sent chicken bones and abusive letters to her ex-husband was "devastated and bitter" after being tricked into a divorce, a court has heard.

Nongyao Yaiprab met Graeme Shore in Bangkok in 1995, where she was working in a bar. He brought the Thai national, now 39, back to England and by early 1997 they were married.

Guildford magistrates were told on Monday that the marriage was an unhappy one, but Yaiprab worked hard to make her husband content.

Paul Masters, defending, said Yaiprab, who speaks no English, was left isolated and lonely and missed her family and friends in Thailand.

Mr Shore sent her on holiday alone, Mr Masters told the magistrates, and on her return tricked her into signing divorce papers she could not understand.

“At some point, he told her she looked rather tired and needed a holiday,” Mr Masters said. “She agreed that this was a good idea, expecting that they would go together somewhere. Instead, she was given one ticket.”

When Yaiprab arrived home, the court heard, Mr Shore refused to meet her from the airport, telling her he was too busy.

Instead, Mr Masters said, Mr Shore’s parents met Yaiprab at a flat and told her she would not be allowed to see her husband or return home unless she signed a document.

“It was in English and she could not understand what it said,” she added. “Mr Shore’s parents just told her to sign it, and she did so that she could return to her husband.

“Later she discovered her signature had finalised her divorce.”

Mr Masters said Yaiprab was "bitter and upset", and after the pair separated she had written to Mr Shore to ask what had happened.

“She blamed herself,” he added. “It had destroyed her self-esteem and made her feel as though she was nothing.”

Prosecuting, Tarique Mohammed said Yaiprab, now of Castle Hill in Guildford, started sending Mr Shore up to eight letters and parcels every day.

Mr Mohammed said Mr Shore, who has since married another Thai woman, became "alarmed and distressed" at the letters.

“They were written in Thai and the complainant [Mr Shore] had them interpreted,” Mr Mohammed added. “The letters said he is evil and cruel.”

On Monday, Yaiprab admitted harassing Mr Shore between January 2 and 14 this year.

Magistrates handed her a restraining order, banning her from contacting Mr Shore directly or indirectly for two years.

Court chairman Rama Sekhawat told the defendant: “While we have every sympathy for you, we feel that this behaviour has gone on for a very long period of time.”

I find this article to be ridiculous and nonsense, unless the woman in question is not very bright.

From what I know a divorce is a complex process with a Petition, a court hearing (meeting with the judge) with both parties present, a wrangle with solicitors and then a settlement in a law court.

I find this story to be completely false and the journalist who wrote it an imbecile.

How could this be so?

I take it that you got divorced in Thailand

I got divorced in the UK

I take it that Nongyao Yaiprab and Graeme Shore got divorced in the UK as if she got divorced in Thailand she could have not been tricked.

It is feasible to get a divorce on the strength of a signature after 2 years of marriage. If the marriage is irreconcilable then a divorce is granted and a decree nisi issued, after a period of 6 weeks a decree absolute is issued.

The Petitioner must either through an affidavit or swears an oath that necessary paperwork served on wife (the respondent) that divorce not contested and that respondent agrees, hence her signature on the documents..!!!! :o

I presume one of them speaks Thai?

“It was in English and she could not understand what it said,” she added. “Mr Shore’s parents just told her to sign it, and she did so that she could return to her husband.

The poorly educated, naive & unsophisticated Graeme Shore, suffering from a severe case of congenital stupidity, tricked into marriage by an unscrupulous & dishonest Thai prostitute! :o

"Met her in a Go-Go bar, m'lud, was a marriage made in heaven, it woz"

They both sounded pretty uneducated and dumb but on the face of it, it seems pretty low to have his parents make her sign divorce papers she couldn't understand and lie to her about what she was being asked to sign. She presumably spoke some English, as he doesn't sound the type of bloke that would be able to speak Thai or other foreign languages. What's not mentioned is whether she got any alimony or assets out of the deal. Maybe not if she was working and he was earning low pay as a barman. He'll probably get what he deserves from the second Thai wife.

I got divorced in the UK and never saw a Judge.

All paperwork was done through the solicitors. The Judge checked the paperwork and granted the divorce. Simple really. Followed by that wonderful Decree Nisi - freedom!!

I find the motive of both characters very cardboard-cut-out and I cannot believe that all one needs is just ONE signature for a full legal divorce.

I would like to know the full scenario for this divorce technique (for future evaluation if needed)

I take it that the guys who are posting their stories of "quickie divorce" there was consent from both parties, that both people knew what they where doing.

I do not think that being tricked into "Just sign here luv and all be fine" is a legal bind. I'm sure there must be laws about this.

And if this woman was so isolated from her culture then why the hel_l is she staying in the UK to hound her ex.

It is unfortunate that newspapers just give us a sensational glimpse of the story and not the facts.

Instead of a bargirl getting one over on a foreigner, the situation has been reversed. It goes both ways in different situations, I guess...

Sending chicken bones and death threats?

For how many years?

Oh yes, she needs our sympathy. :o

She's obviously been in the UK for 12 years, I wonder what her job is. :D

How many years do you think?

Read the article again!

Both of them behaved badly. No doubt about that.

Unfortunately there are quite a few <deleted> on TV that think the guy acted well, in how he handled the case, and they follow up with degrading the woman, due to her previous occupation.

Oh, by the way, what do you think her job is?

Enlighten us now.

Posts and their responses have been deleted.

Well this is certainly a very ugly thread with lots of people making up stories and scenarios to slam both parties involved in what is obviously an incomplete and sensationalized tabloid article.

Lets drop the nastiness, name calling and generally abusive behavior or this thread will be closed.
