Just out of curiosity, suppose I found a pet I wanted to buy here and take back to the U.S. with me, does anyone have an idea of how I might do that? I know there are a large number of pets that are legally allowed to be taken to the U.S., but how would I do it? Do I have to let the U.S. know in advance? What papers may I need? Where would I take my pet to at the BKK airport? What special carrier do I need? Do I need to purchase an airline ticket for the pup? Any help appreciated.

If you're considering to 'find' a pet here and take him/her back with you to the States I suggest to contact www.scadbangkok.org

They have loads of pets, young and old(er) waiting for a good home and SCAD can tell you in detail how to bring your new pet to the US.

Other options are in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Samui etc. etc.

There is an organization that successfully moved a small, gibbering, ape-like creature in and out of the US on several occasions over the previous eight years. Contact the US Secret Service and ask them how they did it. :o

Hello,

In October 2007, I brought 5 cats home to the US from Bangkok. You must first find a good vet. Your dog or cat will need to have updated vaccinations and a rabies shot at least 30 days prior to flying. This is an airline requirement. Within ten days of departure, you must get a "veterinarian's certificate of health"(also an airline requirement) AND you must visit the dept of Agriculture affice at the airport and have your pet examined by their veterinarian in order to obtain an export permit. Not all airlines carry pets. I have found United and Continental to be quite pet-friendly. You must reserve a special place for your animal's kennel with the airline. Cost is related to size. probably from $100-$300. The US only requires that the animal "appears healthy." Dogs and cats 10 lbs and under may travel in the cabin with you, but still require a reservation.
