You need to jailbreak your iPhone - unlock alone is not enough. Then install PDANet via Cydia and follow the instructions. Cydia is an application installer installed by the jailbreak. I have tried PDANet with OS X and it's very easy, but should be OK on Windows too.

Note that the iPhone uses EDGE in Thailand, no 3G.

For 3G you can get a USB stick from CAT Telecom, it's currently the only option. It only works outside Bangkok and the central provinces because of a contract dispute between CAT and Hutch, Hutch owns the central provinces, basically, and doesn't provide data roaming. Hutch also offers "3G" but only at CDMA 2000 1x speeds which is worse than EDGE and so not really worth it. CAT has EV-DO Rev. B.

I jailbroke my iPhone and installed "iPhone Modem" and "PdaNet" apps via Cydia app installer....

"iPhone Modem" is not recommended because it was alot of trouble for some reason.....however, "PdaNet" worked the very first time (on both my HP laptop and on my brand new 2nd gen Mac Air laptop)......

the web surfing on the Mac Air laptop through wireless tethering with my Iphone 3G (even though its an edge or GPRS connection and not 3G yet in Thailand) seems much faster than even my supposed hi-speed wifi connections (or hotspots around town)....
