Thai embassy in Jakarta closes after bomb threat

JAKARTA: -- The Thai embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta has been temporarily closed following a telephoned bomb threat, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed today.

Mr. Seehasak Phuangketkaeow said that embassy officials were continuing to perform their work in a secret location until the embassy reopened.

The British embassy was also closed following a similar scare. Both embassies are located in Jakarta’s central business district, and near hotels favoured by foreign guests.

A spokeswoman for the British embassy said that both had received telephoned bomb threats last night.

Indonesian police have sent bomb disposal experts and anti-terrorism officers to the two embassies, amid fears that there could be an incident similar to the bombing of the Australian embassy last September, in which nine people were killed.

Several countries, including the US and Britain, have warned their nationals not to travel to Indonesia unless necessary.

According to The Jakarta Post this morning, the whole thing was a hoax. Some girl sent the sms because her boyfriend, who's a cop guarding these embassies, was planning to go away for the weekend, without taking her. She's now in the arms of the law.
