Before traveling here to Thailand, I received a two-entry tourist visa in my passport from the US. Do I need to cross the border to re-enter or can I just stay since it allows me another 60-days after the first one expires?

Actually you can get the 30 day extension at any immigration office in country. 1900 Baht it is, there's always a fee when dealing with immigration.

But if you extend for 30 days and your visa is only valid for 3 months from date of entry (check it) be sure you make your next exit/entry before the visa expiration date (not your new permitted to stay until date) if it is earlier.
