Converting A Uk Visa In Thailand

Featured Replies

I currently have a Non-Imm 'O' and my son has an Non-Imm 'ED' Visa from the UK. does anybody know if I can convert these or get one year extensions on them in Thailand? They will run out in August. I usually renew them in UK yearly but then we still have to do border runs but have been told if I get them in Thailand then there's no border runs!!!

You can extend your non-O for 1 year under certain conditions, your sons ED-visa might also be extended based on his conditions. It depends on why you have a Non-O: marriage to a Thai, volunteering, retirement?

Your son can get extensions of stay if he goes to a recognised school for 4 hours a week. The school should be able to help him with the right paperwork. What kind of school is he in and how old is he?

For starters we need to know how old you both are and if the son going to school in Thailand? I assume neither of you has a Thai wife.

I am here with my husband whose 50, I'm 44 and our son is 14. My husband isn't sure whether he wants to work teaching here or not so don't want to rely on a retirement visa or WP at the minute. My son is in full time education here in Hua Hin. The school said that we should get our next visa's in the UK and then convert them when we come back to Thailand. Other people have said to just convert our exisiting visa's. They expire 3rd July but we're going back to UK in 2 weeks time for a month so we will get an extra 90 days from May on re-entry but don't know what to do...help!!

For your son there is no need to get a new visa, with paperwork from the school he is attending he can get an extension of stay from immigration based on his education.

You as a dependend can only get an extension of stay if the person you're dependend of has an extension of stay from immigration himself. That seems not to be the case. Since your son is 14 you could also be a dependent of him on his educational visa. But you would need to show 500,000 in a Thai bankaccount in your name for that one and again, your son need to be on an extension of stay from immigration.

Easiest way:

1. Son, education extension of stay.

2. Husband, retirement extension of stay.

3. Wife, dependent extension of stay.

Since you reportedly already have the required non-immigrant visas, 1 year extensions of stay can be done in Thailand if you can meet the requirements. See website Link for extension requirements 2.9, 2.20 and 2.22.

Ok thanks for your help - will probably do the son, education of stay when w e get back from UK

1. You said he did not want retirement extension as undecided about work so would advise he obtain multi entry non O from Hull or other small Consulate while in UK - that way his options are open. He would have to make 90 day visa runs until work/retirement.

2. If you plan to use the ED and parent with 500k in local back a single entry non immigrant O would be fine for you - that could then be extended after child is on extension of stay.

3. Another ED for child. Single entry should be enough if qualifies and intends to extend.

Yes my husband will come back on multi entry 'O'. So do I need to get new single entry visa's for myself and my son when I go back to UK? If I just come back with the 90days on the existing visa's, are these no good for the extensions?

Yes. The 90 day entries will be ok for applying for extensions.

Correct - your current visas are fine for the new entry/extension - was thinking your return to UK was to get new visas (as is often the case) but your trip is for other reasons. Husband will probably want to get a new multi entry however if visa expires this year - they are not available locally.
