My wife's brother was just recently killed by a guy with a knife.

The parents of the man who did came to my in-laws house and made arrangements to pay my mother-in-law 200000 badt.

This was supposed to be so that nothing would happen to the man later.

I do not think this will be the case though.

Then the parents went to the police station and paid the police. This for the man's release and all charges being erased. Here to the police they paid an unknown amount.

The man was released and at present is free with no charges being pressed.

This happened in the south.

Town of Langu in Satun province.

This is a true case, nothing made up.

I DO NOT THINK IT IS RIGHT!

BUT ONLY IN THAILAND

we all know this goes on as distressing as it is,but we also know that if we get into big trouble we can pay off the fmaily/police and this does happen plenty of times too.

Sorry about your loss

Sorry to hear of your circumstances. I hope you MIL slammed the door in their faces. Six grand isn't going to bring your BIL back. The six grand is purely a selfish act by a family to attempt to prevent prosecution of a family member who is a murderer. If your MIL accepts the money, all she does is admit that her son's life was only worth a few bucks and strengthen the notions that life in Thailand is cheap and that one can literally get away with murder.

Tell the family to accept the money and still press charges. Not keeping the word but who cares when it comes to murder.

Sad part is the in laws unfortunately. They think as he's dead, then its in the past. No point to try to bring him back so get what you can. They don't look to future generations. Short term thinking. I've had this argument before right here in Bangkok amongst the richer folks even. When a dishonest thing has happened, don't dwell on it, just look to future issues. Don't know why Thailand bothers having a court. In fact probably why courts are so slow. It's all about money.

Sad as it may be. But a decent guy like yourself probably shouldn't involve yourself with such a family. You'll have more problems. Is it worth it??? My experience says NO.

Very disturbing.

This country has a worrisome dark side.

My wife's brother got killed as a passenger on a motorcycle (together with the driver, it's said the pick-up driver was drunk, who knows the motorcycle driver/passenger were also intoxicated?)

The parents were paid 20K as compensation for a lost life.

Unfortunately this happens all the time.

I personally know two Thai murderers that are walking free.

One was a domestic and the other a bar brawl, where the guy went home to get a knife and came back to kill the other guy.

Neither of these murderers are rich so not much money could have changed hands, but nonetheless they are both free. Funny sort of feeling talking to someone knowing they have actually killed another human being.

Nope - by our standards its not right, but we shouldn't be looking at these things with Western blinkers on. In the Mid East relatives of a condemed man also have the right to pardon the accused, and its usualy associated with a sum of money been paid over - and in those cases, the whole procedure is enshrined in legislation (its 100% legal!).

Its not of course in Thailand, but old habits die hard - and if all parties concered are amicable to the arrangement, it goes forward - and it happens quite frequently (most often in relation to traffic accidents).

.............. after once its done its done - make as well get something out of it if you can.

So, money is more important than justice, in other words?

You really have "gone native" MF! :o

It's interesting the situation that has just transpired in Afghanistan, where NATO questioned the wisdom and point of continung to support Karzai's govt which was just about to legislate for allowing legal rape in marriage and a few other retrograde steps reducing the rights of women. As the outgoing Dutch NATO boss said, what are we fighting and dying for, when the govt we support is going backwards in terms of human rights protection? Good question and one US citizens should have been asking themselves everyday that Guantanamo Bay camp was kept open, not to mention hundreds of other systematic contraventions of international human rights treaties under the Bush regime. I guess the same could be said over Western govts tacit support for many other unpleasant regimes where ordinary justice takes a backseat to considerations of business and capital. :D

The first guy is dead. The parents have paid the parents. The parents have paid the police. The killer is free.He can do this again if he wishes.

The parents who got paid only want to wait and then use some of the parents money to hire police to kill the killer.

So the killers parents end up paying the police twicw to save and then to kill thier son.

I suppose in some ways it is justice, the guy did kill no question about it and waht would prison have done.

But in my heart I just wish the police had taken the guy out back and killed him the first moment. This would have ended all this continueing like it is.

I am farang but this is my family and I am part of it.

Just find it hard to agree or disagree.
