99% sure you have to get a new 'e-passport' now. Can't remember if you can extend the old ones, but if they can, it is a matter of putting in a new photo and a stamp extending the date.

e-passports have 5 years validity (non extendable), 1000 baht to get, 3 days to issue. If you still can extend the old ones, that is the benchmark. They are pretty cool too!

Today, my wife applied for a new e-passport. So did my three children. Her old passport expired February 2009. We were told that you can extend the old one, but that it can only be extended for 1 year, so it is much better to apply for a new one. Have him bring the old passport with him. They use the information from the old one when applying for the new e-passport. I assume that you get both returned to you the same way it works for US passports. My wife applied at the Washington DC consulate, so the procedure and price are certainly different. It cost $35 in the US and should take between 3 and 4 weeks to be processed.
