WannaTeach Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Hey guys, I am new to this website and was hoping to get some advice. I have been looking to take a TEFL course in Phuket with teflcorp. They are asking me for a deposit and I wanted to make sure they were legit before I committed. Thanks
sanook2me Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Hey guys, I am new to this website and was hoping to get some advice. I have been looking to take a TEFL course in Phuket with teflcorp. They are asking me for a deposit and I wanted to make sure they were legit before I committed. Thanks you need to ask this in the teaching forum - this post will be moved once a moderator wakes up from slumbering the after effects of the Thai New Year away. There are lots of TEFL companies in Thailand. Majority of them are crash courses in teaching which gives you the confidence to enter the classroom but my advice instead of giving £1,000 or more to a TEFL company - go to evening or day release college course in your country - it will probaly be cheaper and you will have a certificate that will have credit points towards a degree and recognised world wide. The benefit to this is that if by some remote chance you enjoy teaching and want to make a career out of it eventually you will have to do a teaching degree and you will have accrued credit points already. No matter what these TEFL joints tell you - there certificates are worthless outside of Thailand.
MiG16 Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 off to the teaching forum this goes. where you can get more info from those in the know
Loaded Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 No matter what these TEFL joints tell you - there certificates are worthless outside of Thailand. That's an opinion that doesn't match reality. I know teachers in the UK, Japan, China, Germany, Taiwan, S Korea, Indonesia teaching with certs from Thailand. The internet would be full of people complaining that their cert wasn't accepted if the above statement were true; and it isn't. As the guy above has never posted before on the teachers' page, I guess his experience of the big wide teaching world is.. em well limited but maybe he would like to post some evidence to support his claim.

Hi Guys, Here is what I experienced a month ago. I had to return to the UK for some time. My thoughts were that whilst in the UK, I could do some teaching on a part-time/on demand basis. I had completed my 4 week 120 hr. TEFL course here in Bangkok with a reputable school; one that has provided me with plenty of interesting work since completion of the course in February of 2007. So, before I left Bangkok, I e-mailed a very well known International Language school in my local town in the UK. I also worked for this same International Language school here in Bangkok. I thought that that would give me an advantage. Once in the UK, I was invited to attend an interview at the school I had e-mailed. I had to bring along all the original certificates of my qualifications. No problem. However, the interviewer (director of Studies) challenged the validity of my TEFL qualification, as it was not Trinity, RSA or Cambridge recognised. Here is the quotation from the e-mail I received: We are a British Council / Accreditation UK accredited school so all our teachers are expected to be native speaker university graduates with a degree, a recognised TEFL or TESOL qualification (i.e awarded by an internationally recognised body such as Trinity, RSA or Cambridge) and preferably at least a year’s TEFL experience. My TEFL/TESOL qualification was accredited and sponsored by a well known British College in the south of the UK. I was extremely impressed with the course and its contents which I followed in Bangkok. However, it did not - according to the Director of Studies of this language school in the UK - comply with UK regulations. It never came to anything and I am now back in Bangkok with plenty of work. I am happy to name the Institute where I completed my 4 week TEFL/TESOL course here in Bangkok and the Language school in the UK which challenged the validity of my TEFL/TESOL qualification but I think that forum rules do not allow this. I welcome any comments, or suggestions on how to convert to a Trinity,RSA or Cambridge recognised qualification. Frm-Bkk
Loaded Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 The BC run CELTA courses and are closely affiliated with Trinity so like to keep things in-house.
Ijustwannateach Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Since this is a contentious kind of issue (TEFL certs) we're going to keep it very, very strictly on-topic. In fact, please confine further posts and opinions to those specifically about the company that OP requests information about- Teflcorp in Phuket. Any signs of smoke or flames and this thread is history.
Martian Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I don't know about the TEFL course you are inquiring about but I just finished one in Chiang Mai and I can now SEE that I received some great training for the money I spent. Regards, Martian
Ijustwannateach Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 As I mentioned, we're going to stick to the topic pretty closely. TEFLcorp in Phuket or please don't bother posting here.
WalkerThai Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 TEFL Corp seems to be legit, in my opinion. I checked them out in person before choosing to do my TEFL at a different school. I chose another school in Phuket over them because of their school location (Phuket Town - not "Phuket" like a beach-side location) and a smaller class size was better to me - more personal attention. There are other options on the island - look around: google " TEFL Phuket " or something. Contact me, and I can give you a rec on the school I went to - they were top-notch. Definitely do a TEFL course - it will get you going well on day one of a teaching job and lord knows the " LOS " needs English teachers.
