Advice For Getting Internet (dsl) In The Sticks...

My wife and I live in here village (mayne 300 ppl total) outside of Mukdahan between Nong Pok and Nongsung. Last year around August we contacted TOT about getting DSL service to the house. Te flat out said no. Can't be done, would be too expensive. This really confused me because the local highschool that less than 2km away just got not one, but two 2MB DSL lines installed! Now its April, and I'm getting ready to contact them again to see if they'll run a line here. There's no landline to the house, and as far as I've seen there just one phonebooth, which I'll assume is the only landline in the village.

What are my options? I'd like to get as much info as I can before calling TOT again.

Thx in advance!

2km is already 50% of what thai adsl can reach so it's a huge difference.get a cdma device instead it'll be cheaper than pay for the cable.

I would second that, checkout your nearest CAT office , for their CDMA service, ive been using a MC727 USB modem for some time , over all pleased with the results , ask CAT where is the nearest CAT tower to your home . I have a TOT land line but got told I live to far away for an ADSL connection .

Could also try using Edge

I have both Edge and IPSTAR (TOT) and the swpeeds are pretty much the same.

With Edge be sure to buy a package from your mobile service provider, othewrwise costs will be high.

I had the same problem as you about a year ago TOT came round advertising their services so I signed up months later I had heard nothing. The local government village office had also applied at the same time, TOT then sent them a letter saying they wanted us both to share the cost to bring the cable to the village at 20,000 Baht so I laughed that off.

I tried CAT CDMA and thought it was useless, I also tried the old EDGE that was better, now one of my neighbours who had a TOT phone line already installed managed to get them to install internet right away which baffled me, so in the end we both share the connection me being on wireless which works great at 2MB.

There are a few options but getting internet in the sticks is no easy task.

I'm using GPRS/EDGE right now. Its ok, I guess; lets me check my email and do little surfing, but its far from what I'd really like to have. I've used IPSTAR in the past and found it very unreliable and extremely slow, far worse than dialup.

I'll look into CDMA. It sounds as though that may be my only other option besides using the cell phone for now...

As far as the 'helping to pay for the line' solution, if TOT offered it to me I might take them up on it. If I can get at least a 2MB DSL or better it'd be worth it for me in the long run.
