In 2 weeks i will go to visit KL on my mission te obtain a new Non Im B Multiple entry.

Arrive KL with Firefly from Samui on Sunday 10 May afternoon, return Wednesday morning 13 May.

I will stay 3 nights at D'Oriental Inn in Petaling Street aka China Town.

Can anyone give me some directions how to travel from Petaling street to the Thai Embassy in Jalan Ampang by public transport?

I try to avoid taxis as my budget is rather low.

Same question for going from/to the airport by public transport as well..

All other tips, experiences are more then welcome as this is my first trip to KL.

Thanks !!

Sorry, but I can't help you with this airport, but I'm sure there are local buses to the city centre. I only use KLIA or LCCT airports.

The nearest overhead train station to Petaling St is at Plaza Rakyat, but this is very hard to find! You're better off walking to Masjid Jamek (pronounced Mas-yid Yamek) and getting on the underground train there. You don't have to change to another train if you get on here. It's not too far from Petaling St. Google any street map of KL to get your bearings. Here is a good one.

http://malaysia.sawadee.com/kualalumpur/map_big.htm

Using the above link, Petaling St is the area around the pink circled 13 just south of Jalan Cheng Lock.

Just south of the pink, circled 12 is Masjid Jamek station. Ampang Pk station is just north west of the pink, circled 35.

It's only 4 stops to Ampang Park. Get off at Ampang Park, exit the station and turn left. Pass a McDonalds and cross over the busy intersection (marked Middle Ring Road 1 in the link). Go past the French embassy and the Thai embassy is along that road. It's about a good 10 minute walk from Ampang Pk underground station. Don't use taxis as many refuse to turn on the meters.

There's always a long queue, so get to the embassy early (8.30 should be ok)

I was once there at the embassy for a Tourist visa, was surprised, from the long queue.

Had to wait 3 hours, 2 hours from it standing as there were not enough sitting possibilitys.

Than they told me, not enough space left in my Passport get a new one in your embassy first.

I was angry and took the next available flight home to Europe from KL.

If I can avoid it, I do not use that Thai consular-section in KL!

good advice from james, the LRT (underground) to Ampang Park then walk in the opposite direction to the towers to the Thai embassy. Just make sure you get on the LRT and not on the overground as both tun through masjid jamek, you could walk to pasar seni also to get the LRT, this is closer to petaling street.

Avoid taxis, they will rob you blind.

I believe you will fly into the old airport from Samui with that airline, you will fly into Subang (forgive me if I am wrong). the low cost terminal at KLIA is easy as they have cheap buses into town or the main terminal you can get train for 35 ringit. From Subang however it will have to be a taxi, either into town or to the nearest LRT station, I have no idea about buses from here.

I lived in KL for 3 years so if you have any specific request for information about activities let me know

Thanks for all your tips, just what i needed!

As for public transport from Subang i just found out that bus U81 stops at terminal 2, just 5 minutes walk from terminal 3.

Not sure if the bus goes to Sentral though, anyone take this one before?

About changing money, i have only Thai Baht and wonder if it is best to buy Ringgits in Thailand or to change in KL on arrival.

The visa has be paid in Ringgits as well right?

Heard before you loose a lot when changing these currencies, any tips?

Thanks again!!

You mean when you arrive in KL you changed THB for MYR right?

I always change at least a minimal amount of the destination currency before leaving any country at least you then are sure to be able to cover the basics. I don't think it makes much difference where you change THB to MYR so you aren't going to lose out. For me it is just one thing less to be bothered with if I am already holding local currency whilst trying to grab transport away from the airport.

You loose approx 10% when exchanging from THB to MYR. But you should still exchange like 2000 baht/200 ringit before leaving Thailand to cover transportation and food etc when arriving KL. I get a good exchangerate with my Thai ATM card at any Malaysian ATM machine, but sometimes they are not online with my banks in Thailand (Ayudhua/Visa and Siam Commercial/Mastercard) for 5-15 hours.

1. Do not change your money in Thailand, and do not change Baht to USD, that is a bad idea as for every time you change the currency, you loose money. Change about what you need for your transportation to the city from the airport, then change the rest at one of several money changer in the little India area near Masjid India, opposite Masjid Jamek, the rate should be between 10 to 10.20, check the rates in tow or three money changer shops first.

2. From Masjid Jamek you either take the MRT or a bus; for the MRT there are three lines in Masjid Jamek; two on one side and the third is oppsite; however to be sure just ask the information desk (if available) or the sales counter about the train going to KLCC or simply to Ampang Park, and they will direct you to the right one. If you decide to take the bus then look for bus number 28, and ask the driver or the conductor first wether they are going to Ampang Park (if not they will direct you to the right bus), and in this case you continue from Ampang Park for one more bus stop to near the Spanish Embassy (right after the French Embassy) and walk a little further or two bus stop shortly After the Thai Embassy then walk back.

3. After you register your name and get the appliction form from the guard at the main gate; proceed to the consulate door and queue for the number, (Tip:if you are among the first 10 people, then try to fill up your application form in the queue otherwise, just get you number and go back outside to the table and fill it up slowly, you will have plenty of times. I always get number one or two, therefore I have to fill up my application in the queue) .

4. The passport delivery time has changed from next day between 1.00-3.00 afternoon to 2.30-4.30 afternoon

5. The visa is free, and double entry is not available.

6. From the airport use Air Asia bus to the city (it is the cheapest, about 8 RM to KLC "Central").

7. I got my visa right after songkran, no problem whatsoever.

Good luck and have a nice trip.

Many thanks for all the tips !

I have 2 questions though;

1. I downloaded an aplication form from the embassy website, can i fill it in before i go there and will this be accepted as well?

2. This is the first time i read that the 1 year Non immigrant B multiple entry visa is free, can you tell me when this changed and what you mean with the double entry remark? Or did you get a tourist visa?

Posted

1. I do not know if they will accept the downloaded application form, but at least you can fill it here and just copy all the information later on the form you will receive from the Embassy. This will save you a lot of time.

2. Well, I was talking about the tourist visa, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Cheers

1. My downloaded form was accepted ok (but this was August last year). However, get another form from the security guard and fill it in as well while you are waiting. Beats the boredom and gives you something to do! Don't forget a pen and an extra photo.

2. Tourist visas are free, not Non Imms!!

Open a bank account in Koh Samui tomorrow saturday. Get a ATM card with Visa or Mastercard. Withdraw the money in ringit at KL airport

The Air Asia Bus from KL LCCT to KL Sentral can be payed in thai baht onboard Air Asia. Sentral has plenty of moneychangers open every day.
