Receiving Calls And Internet Access But For Very Short Periods

Featured Replies

I own a condo in Bangkok but only use it during my holidays. However I do have a PC there and also I am asked for a contact number for deliveries.

It seems odd to pay for a phone and or internet that are going to sit idle most of the time. I do have an old 'unlocked' mobile phone and I guess could get a simm in Bangkok for it, is that a practical work around for the phone? Or are there other alternatives?

I have seen this website is this any good?

http://www.thailandsim.com/

And on internet how can I get high speed access but just for short periods (say 1-2 weeks at a time) - I have used TOT WiFi but although fine for emails, it is too low in bandwidth for windows updates etc.

I have used the search facility but did not really find what I was looking for - Thanks for any assistance PKRV

Buy a 50 bht sim, one that gives you the longest validity for the lowest cost (I believe this is DTAC, but I might be wrong - I use AIS, so I'm no expert on DTAC, but my SIM requires 300 bht for 3 months validity, which is not much good for you) and give them that number.

Edit: I mean 1 month's worth of validity - wishful thinking I guess...

Thanks for the response - Would that mean my phone number would keep changing? Is there a concept of pay as you go?

^Yes, it will be a pay as you go type sim and no, your number won't need to change (as long as you keep it alive with the necessary validity). Just load it up with the minimum credit you need for one year's validity. As I said, I don't use DTAC, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't cost very much. I believe they have some deal where you pay a nominal fee to extend validity for a year. Check their website.

No need. Purchase a HAPPY Simple SIM for 49 baht at your nearest SevenEleven/Family Mart. With the first Top Up(any amount) you will get a year validity.

For Internet Access, you can use their GPRS/EDGE service with a suitable phone and adaptorBluetooth, for instance).

Thanks for that I was completly unaware of this product. Any idea of the speed of the internet service? Basically is it up to downloading microsoft updates?

Oddly my nearest 7/11 is just across the road. However crossing the road is a bit life threatening gamble!
