Of all the pictures I made, only one is of reasonable quality and I am very lucky that it happens to be the picture that shows

the first appearance, though still very modest, of The Orange Club

Alltogether 22 persons, of which 14 foreign residents of Chiang Rai, joined the convoy from Rico's (our supporters home)

to the stadium. Everybody enjoyed the game, the drama and the scenery around it.

For many of us couch potatoes it was the first time in many years that we attented a live game.

It was a great experience. Quite different from sitting on the couch at home with peanuts and a platoon of the

bright yellow ones and, at the highest peak of emotion, maybe remove the right leg from the left and

put the left one over the right instead. No, this was completely different. It turned men into boys and women into girls!

Thanks to all who made it possible, the founder/manager, the staff, the fantastic players and all the great Chiang Rai

public (I guess much more than thousand people) with who we had the privelige to share this happening.

The acoustic performance of Orange Power, the supportersclub, was a great contribution to the fantastic atmosphere.

I also want to pay a warm tribute to these twenty or more young men from Petchabun, who after the match climbed on an

open six-wheel truck to start -after a lost game!- their long journey home. The driver told me that eight hours wouldn't do...

Also thanks to them for coming! They showed a great spirit!

400 Kilometers from Chiang Rai, last time it took me almost six hours...

Good old Bradthai has problems with his internet connection.

His handwritten (!) analysis of the match has still to be digitalized.

I am very curious what he wrote about the fact that for the second time Chiang Rai

only played offensive the first half.

You would say that the experience in Pit'lok was a warning: 5 - 0 in the first half and

(out of a penalty) only one goal in the second.

Plus that Pit'lok got a lot of space and thus chances.

Now, at 3 - 0, again starting the second half in the defensive mood was quite risky against

Petchabun as they are a team that you can expect to cash in on every chance they get.

The Chiang Rai players started to look at the ball too much and forgot the positioning.

It became painful clear when a player of Chiang Rai was taken of the field for injury treatment

and the team played temporary with ten men.

In less than ten minutes Petchabun scored twice as they got plenty of space on the right.

Nobody moved in, not even the coach reacted on this dangerous situation.

We were very lucky that three minutes after the second goal a Petchabun player lost controle

over the ball in an excellent shooting position, permitting our magnificent goaly to pick up the ball

as if it was a mango that had fallen down from a tree.

Otherwise we might have lost two points.

imo the best form of defence, especially when you are in the lead, is attack.

cru played possession football in the first half. quite easy when none of the opposition

enters your half. cru where patient and took the opportunities that came their way. the 3 goals were well taken.

the second half.......hmmmm......it seems that cru were told to go out and defend the lead.

this is all well and good if you have a team that is totally focussed, and a team drilled in marking space when the ball is not on your side of the park.

both phetchabun goals came after the ball was on phetchabun's left side for a length of time.

with a switch to their right, the cru left fullback and midfielder had been drawn to the ball resulting in a free run on goal.

to play defensively requires 100% concentration, thus meaning instead of marking man to man, sometimes you have to mark the space. something the team will have to work on if they are going to use those tactics in the future.

again, as limbo said above, a good night out. a chance to socialise with other farang, and a chance to watch some sport in an organised way. many thanks to rico, giving the orange supporters the chance to stock the eskies before the trip to mae fah luang.

I was at Tak yesterday

we had a fan club friendly match and it was raining but we had a good game and the result was 1-1

match with tak the orange power from CR + BKK around 45-50 of us did 90 minute standing and singing none stop

in the first half the score was 1-1 and cr was under pressure but the second half we scored 3 goals

after the match we had dinner with crutd players and staffs

then back to chiang rai

I admire their dedication, stamina and endurance.

To a great extend it's 'them' that makes the difference during the games of CR.!

During the first half, last Saturday in Tak, it seemed as if our men in orange played a sticky ball.

Earlier during the day it had been raining a lot and a great part of the match was played in clouds of drizzle, unwilling to open up and the field

was therefore soaked 'just that little bit too much'.

The football field of the Mae Fah Luang University, the home ground of Chiang Rai United, is well drained. Ten minutes after even a rather heavy rain shower the field will be playable again, but it seemed as if the field in Tak had more problems to get rid of the wet and non-sollicited blessings from above.

It took about 35 minutes for Chiang Rai to glue the ball for the first time against the net behind an excellently keeping goaly of Tak and one minute before the end of the first half Tak managed in its turn to pass our Pansa Meehatam: 1 - 1 .

After tea the team of Chiang Rai seemed to be reborn: in stead of trying to shove the ball to each other in straight passes, of which many times in vain, they put their shoes a little bit further under the leather and lifted it in free flights towards its intended destination. This worked out great and keeping the ball high created the one chance after the other. Only (!) three times the team managed to silver them: After ten minutes the second goal, two minutes later the third and before the match ended the ball sailed for a fourth time behind Tak's goaly: Final result 1 - 4 !

Chiang Rai United wrote history last Saturday: It was the first time that Tak was defeated on its own grounds.

Also Chiang Rai has not been defeated yet at home and coming Saturday it is Kamphaeng Phet's turn to try to achieve where others failed.

Next match: Coming Saturday June 13 at 6 o'clock, in the Mae Fah Luang University Sports Stadium.

For transport and car-pooling please come to Rico's opposite the Condotel before five! Last time we reduced the number of cars from nine to four.

Nope, Mr.Pond coach of CRUTD had refused to put the team in FA cup because he only has 20 players in his team and FA cup will start around second leg and play off round.

Our goal is to go to first division and once we are in first division we will automatically be in the FA cup ( no need to be in qualify round) said mr.Pond

I don't have a clue either ...

Concerning the match against Kampaeng Phet last Saturday I must say that it was the best football-technically and most entertaining out of the three games I have seen so far (my humble opinion!).

Anybody who thought that Kampaeng Phet would be a team that could be put aside easily, must have been seriously disappointed.

We got that comforting lead out of a beautiful headed ball by Watcharakorn after exactly 30 minutes and five minutes later again a castle of a chance, and yes, even two minutes before the end of the first half again a second goal was hanging in the air, but luck had clearly taken a break.

One of the highlights of the second half was without doubt the spectaculair save of our goaly Pansa Meesatam in the 10th minute.

15 Minutes later it was again Kampaeng Phet that almost scored the equalizer, but then the wind started to blow some empty waterbottles along the line in the same direction as the Kampaeng Phetters had to send the ball and their game was over.

The wind made it more difficult to controle the ball for our opponents and Chiang Rai United got its turn again. In the 32nd minute it was the goaly of Kamphaeng Phet who with a 'pike pearch like' dive jump managed the catch the ball in the outer right corner of his goal and therewith wrote the second higlight of the second half on his name.

It was a nice match to look at, many great moments and as usual a great atmosphere also thanks to the unsurpassable 'Orange Power' group that seemed to have practized many new songs and yells.

Bradthai, who as a formal professional player (Sydney City, Singapore etc.) must have a great eye to estimate the number of visitors on public galeries, estimated the crown on more than 1600. Myself, more the conservative counting-type, came on 1400 plus. So the real number might have been inbetween these two estimates.

Yes Luvworks, it is pure entertainment and every game there are surprising novelties around the pitch showing up to make things even better. It can be small airplane models filling the air during the break or beautiful female supporters of Chiang Rai United showing their affinity for this beautiful sport not only by cheering on the team but by their sheer presence as well.

Next game will be the 4th of July, but against who and where and at what time is still in the dark. But don't worry, we'll know in time.

Yesterday it was my honor to present at the occasion of his 81st birthday a shirt (L) of Chiang Rai United to the oldest foreign supporter of the team, Dutch Mr. Wout, in Chiang Rai and environmenst better know as Loung Wow.

I'm still not sure who they wil play, bt it is most likely to be the reverse fixture of rond 1 (this is the format of the Thai Premier League) which woud be Chiang Rai v Chainat.

I'll keep you updated if I know anything.

So aside from the real top supporter, who will follow the team to Kamphaeng Phet the 4th of July, the lazy, somewhat over-weighted version will not have to get his potatoe out of his couche before Saturday July 11 for the home game against Tak.

big news in today. The format for promotion to division 1 was released. http://www.thaileaguefootball.com/

In summary it means that by winning Division 2 North region Chiang Rai qualify for a play off group at the end of the year with the other regions winners. They will need to finish in the top 3 in that group to qualify for division 1.

Limbo, thanks for plug, but I have to warn you that it is sometimes tough to know what rules are in place by the FAT as they change regularly. Anyway I'll try and keep it updated.

Important news is also that Chiang Rai United will play its home games from now on in the stadium of Chiang Rai town (Sanam Kila).

Most of you will know the location of these sport fields as you might have been playing tennis there, or swimming, or shooting, or playing a 'jeu de boules', or jogging, or just looking at these youngsters playing the marvellous game that's called takraw.

Coming from the north over the superhighway you cross the bridge over the Maekok and take immediatly at the first traffic light to the left. Straight on for about two kilometer and you are there.

Coming from the south you take to the right at Hi Yek (King Mengrai monument) and then to the left after two kilometer.

For some magic reason (Chiang Rai simply had no team) the beautiful football stadium of the municipal sportfields was hardly used.

The last two home games at the stadium of the Mae Fah Luang University (against Petchabun and Kampaeng Phet) were visited by about 1300 - 1400 supporters. It will be interesting to see if that number goes up and how much.

The 17 km superhighway to the university were not really supportive, but from the other side now it will be much further for the fans from the north and from Maechan in particular.

I am happy about it, though the surroundings of the 'old' stadium are unsurpassable in their beauty.

Hope to see you Saturday evening July 11 at the stadium of Chiang Rai for the match against Tak of which Chiang Rai United won away with 4 - 1.

We had a friendly match with Phare yesterday ( saturday ) we had some new players that came for a trail.

The result was 1-1 .

Phare got almost all new players and I heard 2 of them are from Ghana and some other African .

The pitch at Sanam Kila is smaller than Mae fah luang stadium so its differcult for crutd to play because we need space for our forwards.

As you can see , Watcharakorn number 7 he always run down to the left side or through the center with the ball but with the smaller pitch he had a bad time last game.

our number 9 , Chatchai has got injured and he will be out for 2 months.

Thanks Brook for the update! Sad story about Chatchai Narkwijit. He is always dangerous, in a manner of speaking even if he only looks at the ball, because he really masters the art of creating space. Extremely fast and effective. A pleasure to see him play.

Okey, time for some good news!

Chiang Rai United , by its sheer existence, has already shown to be enormous important for the promotion of football in our province:

May 31 five young northern Thai men from the ethnic minorities (the 'hilltribes') of Chiang Rai Province visited the football game Chiangrai United - Petchabun (3 - 2) in the stadium of Mae Fah Luang University.

As if inspired by the American president himself they said: "Yes, we can do too!"

Two of the gentlemen, one being Akha and the other Yao, decided to set up their own football club.

Three weeks later, June 21 a first talent identification day was held: the contours of a club became visible!

This weekend, exactly four weeks after their visit to Chiang Rai United , the final selection of the players took place, the captain was choosen and many practical problems found a solution. A football club was born: Chiang Rai Hills FC .

Australian Brad, a highly respected English teacher in Chiang Rai and former professional player (Sydney City and Singapore Army), FIFA licensed coach cat 3 as well, was prepared to get this team going. Furthermore another 'professional' was found to shoulder the task of commercial manager. He happens to be the best one you could wish.

More information will follow at the occasion of the official presentation of the team.
