My wife bought it in the USA. New with U.S. warranty. But mailing it back and forth and risking customs duty (...) :)

Has anyone used an ACER repair center? Is there an authorised one in Bangkok?

Most IT mall having an Acer Service Center. But I really suggest to go to the Head Office Service Center at Rama 3 Road. Their Service is excellent and they will have all spare parts available. And most of the time you can just wait for the repair.

They'll fix it for you, but not under warranty. Of course, this being Thailand labor is going to be very cheap, like 100 BHT, and if you are lucky the part is cheap too, so it won't break the bank.

Acer warranty is not international. You have to return it to where you bought it to get stuff fixed under warranty.

Reimar's right, head office will be your best bet.

My acer netbook bought here in thailand two months ago has an international warranty, kinda funny because I used to warn people off buying electronics here because of the warranty issues, even comes with a little acer booklet with all the limitations, but I seriously doubt a usa model does just go to their website and check.

Interesting - maybe they changed their warranty policies?

I had bought a TM 8204 top of the line business notebook back in 2006, came with a 3 year warranty. But when I tried to get service in the USA they told me I'd have to get it back to Thailand to get it serviced under warranty.

No, they don't!! I was buy my Acer in October 2006 and it came with 1 year intl Warranty already which I was able to extend with another b2 years (cost THB 2,990.00) to a total of 3 year and all of them international!

Did you ever have a notebook repair here in Thailand? The prices are normally international standard. For 100 Baht they might not even talk to you - at least this was my experience with IBM. A sound card for my Thinkpad for instance was about Baht 8000. So he should ask for a cost estimate before he starts. Perhaps Acer is cheaper than IBM (Lenovo now). But Baht 100? Hard to find a hair cut in the meantime for this.

Acer has an international warranty. But you have to read the contract if YOU have it and for how long. But he should not forget to ask for a cost estimate. My highest notebook repair in Bangkok was Baht 90.000 (it got full of water from an aircon). But I had insurance for this $ 8000 notebook at this time. Never would spend so much money again for such a piece of scrap :-)))

If the Laptop is out of Warranty the Service Charge is THB 800.00 plus Spare Parts by Acer Thailand. Within Warranty it's free even if the Laptop was bought in an different Country but carries intl. Warranty.

I did not place it under the aircon but the aircon sprayed the water half a meter on my computer. But this was not the problem of the notebook - I agree. But there were so many broken things - keyboard, DVD-drive, sound card, screen, the cover had to be repaced 3 times because the color made bubbles and went off, then it got sticky here in the humid weather like chewing gum, etc. This Thinkpad was an endless nightmare.

I still have an Thinkpad 701c (the Butterfly!) since 1996 which is still in use for to do service for Novell Netware and has never any problems. Same as the other Thinkpads I had used over the years!

But even the best car can be an "Monday" car!

If you Laptop was an real Thinkpad, IBM didn't was using Color paint for the Case, the color of the Case was the Plastic itself and not painted! The Lenovo Series are painted! but that Machines never was costing $8000!

The most expensive Thinkpad (the top end model at that time) I had was THB 140,000.00 and that's more than 10 years ago! And a complete keyboard for that laptop at that time was just THB 200 more expensive (4,100.00) than a Caps Lock Key Cap (3,917.00) for an Toshiba Satellite 1000 which I had to repair at the same day that time!! I would never forget THAT difference in cost's!

In 1998 the Thinkpad 770 with DVD player and MPEG card at this time was $8000 and this tax free - I lived in CA and ordered from NY. I have to admit that the version with the mpeg card was the most expensive one. Only this feature added several hundreds of $ (I guess it was about 600).

The cover where the keyboard is was painted and IBM had a severe problem with it. It had big bubbles. The rest of the notebook is in a plastic style that gets in humid air soft and sticky like chewing gum. I still have this notebook lying around in Pattaya - so if you have an doubts please come and look yourself. You will even see the new bubbles.

Otherwise I have nothing against IBM. So I have no need to write garbage here. My brother worked with them and his wife still has a very high management position at the headquarter in Poughkeepsie, NY. But this notebook was scrap and it was a great idea of IBM to sell their notebook business to Lenovo. :)
