ThaiLife Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Not sure if this is the correct place to post this , but here goes .. I was talking to a friend who lives near by , and he happened to show me his electricity bill, which was 520 Baht for the Month he is running about the same number and type appliances / lighting / computer Etc as I have at my house for about the same time. My electricity bill for the same Month was 1,020.91 Baht, units used were 286 which I make 3.56 per unit, I don't understand if we are both running the same appliances for approximately the same duration , why my bill is higher ?, we also compared his old bills to my old bills , which show his unit cost is the same as mine. and his old bills are all a lot lower that my old bills. How can I find out exactly why my bills are higher ?

lopburi3 Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 No two appliances draw the same electric. His refrigerator may use less electric or be in a cooler area of home? It may be better or more efficient? The same with everything else. Do you both pull plugs when not using equipment? It really is almost impossible to say as no two homes are going to be the same. But if you do not have air conditioning the refrigerators are likely the biggest users of electric and they can vary a lot.
ThaiLife Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 Thanks , is there any way of working out by say looking at the appliance wattage, just what its costing in units per hour to run, that would give me some thing to go at, I would say if any thing my friends has his appliances running ( TV's computers Etc ) more that I do , both the houses are privatley owned and the bills are paid direct to the electricity company.

You could take some 100 watt light bulbs and switch them on for an hour and look at the meter afterwards - everything else should be off. But I am not sure how precise the watt consumption of the light bulbs are.
endure Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Is the unit usage shown on the bills? It's that you ought to be comparing first.
Phil Conners Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Turn off everything in your house, then check if the meter is still running. If it is someone is leeching your electricity.
RKASA Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Are you taking cold or hot showers. Second biggest user of power in the home. We got heaters in three bathrooms but don't use them, the storage tnk water is warm enough.
BigSnake Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Big different between Bt520 and Bt 1020, Do you have Air Con(?) It could be hard press to tell exactly what other family member are doing when you are out, i.e., extra long shower on hot afternoon, old water pump run big time, AC open longer, Fans going most of the day, etc or just many little things that are hardly notice will add up in the end. I as recall sometime ago a Thai friend was telling me about a different FTS(??) rate once you use over a certain number of Unit, the rate was higher, maybe someone here as more knowledge on what ever this Fts rate is.

How can I find out exactly why my bills are higher ? Any residential customer that pays an electric invoice directly to the PEA based on a single watt-hour meter will pay at the same rates. The average rate for a single meter including the FTS charges and tax is anywhere from 3.2 baht per kwh up to about 3.7 kwh. It depends on how many kwh (units) you use. The invoice you have for 1020.91 and units used at 286 equals 3.57 baht per unit which is about normal. I do not see any units for the second invoice but if you take the cost of 520 divided by the normal average of 3.5, the units should be about 149 for that invoice. You say you are using the same appliances and other things. I would say this is not accurate as the usage is about half on the lower one. So this house is using appliances that are more efficient or they are not using something as long as you. Aircons and refrigerators are the biggest culprits of electric use. But at 1020 for a month this is in my opinion quite normal for a farang house. With minimal AC use. My average invoice is 1200 to 1600 and it all depends how long and how many days I use the AC. One AC in the bedroom. The other equipment is the normal stuff.
BEENTHEREDONETHAT Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Did you ever have a permanent meter installed in place of the temporary one. They charge about twice is much for the units on a temp compared to a permanent meter.
jrbkk64 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I can't understand how anyone would worry about the OP's issue! What a waste of time for 500 baht and top of that comparing apples with pears. For what its worth my electricity bill is 5-6,000 baht/month, mostly AC I think.

I once house sat for an English family in Pattay , while they went back to good old Blighty, and they said our electricity bill should be coming soon , will you please pay it , and we will give you the money back . The bill arrived , 13,000 baht . so I rang the family in the Uk, and told them their must be a mistake with the bill, no that's correct was the reply , that's normal for us. But it was a 5 bedroom house
