Thai Visa members may remember approximately two years ago the Rotary Club of Koh Samui set up a blood group database comprising the blood group and contact details of anyone living on the islands who wished to help donate blood in case of an emergency at any of Samui’s five hospitals.

The database has, we are told by the hospitals been used successfully on many occasions when blood donors were urgently needed, particularly in cases of road accidents.

Since the database was originally set up, some residents have left the island and new residents have arrived.

The club believes it is now time to update the database and offers the opportunity to anyone living on the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan to offer their blood should the need arise.

Whilst everyone is welcome to be included on the list, we particularly wish to encourage those who have the less common blood groups such as A-ve, O-ve etc. to become involved.

If you do not know your blood group but would like to be included, we are holding a blood group testing session at Thai International Hospital this coming Saturday 16th May between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm. Tests will be carried out by Thai Inter staff and we thank the hospital for their co-operation and help.

No appointment is necessary.

Once completed, the database is sent to the five hospitals concerned and the Rotary Club has no further involvement.

We would like to take this opportunity to assure any potential donors that all information given will be kept in the strictest of confidence and the email addresses will not be used by the club nor given nor sold to any third party.

Please find below a copy of the questionnaire to complete and return via pm to me.

A similar plea to that above written but in Thai is also attached if you know any local people who may wish to help.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and let us all hope that by offering to donate our blood we may be able to save many lives in the future.

A-ve, O-ve....?

I am not aware of these blood groups.

I am O RhD NEG. How that compares to the above I don't know.

It was not my intention to start a discussion here on blood types.

My shorthand maybe incorrect for which I apologise, but I believe most people will have an idea of what we are looking for.

Eric, I feel sure your O RhD NEG. blood type could be one which is quite rare on Samui, indeed only 7% of the UK population has it so we would be grateful if you would complete and return a questionnaire for us.

Big C. The blood group data base is for the hospitals to keep. People willing to give blood give their contact details. In the event of a patient requiring blood then one of the good people on the data base matching the required blood group would then be contacted and asked to attend the hospital where they would give some blood. :)

As to the other query. O-ve, A-ve would I presume stand for O negative and A negative. O+ve, A +ve would stand for O positive A positive.

Please remember you can visit Thai International Hospital tomorrow (Saturday) between 10.00 am and 3.00pm to get your blood group checked and have it included on the Blood Database.

OK, I'm also AB+

I can receive any blood.

I can only donate to another AB+

You and me are the lucky ones in case of accident.
