UBC upgrade

Friday 22nd May 2009

This afternoon I received a call from UBC offering me a ‘free upgrade’ from my GOLD package to PLATINUM explaining it was a permanent offer with no additional monthly charges.

I explained to the lady that without having written proof of what UBC was actually offering I was left with little choice other than to declined the offer.

Anyone else had this offer as I’m a little suspicious about the ‘FREE’ bit.

Your post sounds too familiar to ignore.

below is a copy/paste of what I just posted to another topic "Cat vs ToT"

Its uncanny and weird that both UBC and ToT would both be offering free upgrades with similar (identical) brand labels at the same time one being TV, the other phone/net access.

Hi,

To tell you the truth I don't know what package I have. Its just as well because its certainly not as advertized.

I pay ToT 738 Baht a month, that's all I need to know because that is a valid number. Anything else (3, 5 10, 20 Mbps whatever) like the word "guaranteed" is fluff and hence meaningless. Until 2 days ago, for 738 TB, I had a Goldcyber acct. then Wednesday or Thursday morning my browser had a ToT page on it saying my acct. was "invalid". I contacted them and was told that I had been "upgraded to Platinumcyber at no extra cost" and only needed to access the router control panel and make the changes. Some alram bells went off then as I have lived here long enough to not really expect to get anything of value "at no extra cost". I reset the config. as instructed and things resumed. Gc was never a speeding bullet. The most I got from it was around 200 kb/s while downloading from file sharing sites in the middle of the night. 2 to 6 AM is the best time for me, by 10 AM it crawls. Since my "upgrade" the DA one click downloader that I attached to Firefox can barely reach 140. In the daytime I might get 50-60 with uTorrent BUT browsing simultaneously is like watching the paint dry on the walls. If I want to check my gmail acct., I need to stop uTorrent. Something tells me that I'd be wasting my time by asking for a free downgrade back to Gc.

I'd be interested to hear from others who have had a "Platinumcyber" upgrade recently.

If they wanted to do that they would just turn it on and then tell you about it.  Had you said yes I bet the following would have been a lot of information collection.  If you pay auto it may have asked for bank information.  Would UBC upgrade anyone without charges NO WAY MAN.  Would an isp ?  yes, and they have before and have been in some places just lately, but it sometimes cost because the terms of use can but don't always change with it.  I just got a discounted upgrade with ToT on IpStar and no strings attached.  Pretty cool.  PS I had to find the ad and go into the office and ask for it.

A couple of weeks ago I had problems with my modem and a technician (which I knew for a long time by phone) came to visit me. I asked him about the upgrade to 3Mbs and the price reduction from 1,000 baht 790 baht.

He told me not to change the package and stick with Goldcyber, as it would have much better bandwidth than the new faster rated package. I've been always very satisfied with Cybergold and will stick with my 2Mbs 1,000 baht package.

I don't get it. Why are you charged 1k for ToT Goldcyber, I pay 738. Add ons?

My guess is that UBC are trying to create buffalo sh*te for their investors following all those customers claiming they'll downgrade to gold when BBC Entertainment is pulled. This is one way they can show there's been no change (or less of a reduction) to the number of Plantinium subscribers.

Next thing will be an increase in the Platinum/Gold fees to compensate for the lost revenue from all those apparent cancellations or downgrade to Gold.

Well, if you get the free offer to upgrade TOT from 2MB to 3 MB it's real as was the upgrade from 1MB to 2MB they are trying not to lose business to the competition.

You have to sign a new contract so it's not comparable with the 1 to 2Mbs upgrade we received earlier. And the 3Mbs is not as fast as the old 2Mbs package, as told.

I get mostly 200-224Kbs downloads all through the day. Perhaps some of those who received the 3Mbs (or 4Mbs) Platinum upgrade can show us some results. It seems DustyBooky's 3Mbs doesn't seem that satisfactory as my 2Mbs package.

Update.

During our conversation she offered to switch my signal immediately to PLATINUM but like I said, I told her ‘I have nothing in writing so you make no changes’.

At that she asked for my e-mail address which I gave her, she said she would send the written offer to me via my e-mail address but as of this morning I have had no mail from UBC.

A few weeks ago and without announcing anything TT&T upgraded my 3MB Indy package connection to 4MB.

As yet I haven’t received next month’s bill but will be interested to see if the additional 1MB comes ‘free of charge’

Are we for the first time experiencing competition in LOS?

Are you using an analogue or digital decoder?

We have cable TV and use an analogue decoder and until last month subscribed to their gold package. They have been trying for many months to get us to upgrade to Platinum and thereby installing a digital decoder.

It's possible to buy pirate analogue decoders and watch UBC for free or at a greatly reduced price. I know several people who have had UBC for free for a number of years.

I think installing a digital decoder gives UBC more control over the signal.

UPDATE.

Monday 25th May, 10.30hrs.

Re-Fridays phone call from a UBC rep?

Still no e-mail as requested outlining the so-called 'free' upgrade from GOLD to PLATINUM.

yesterday I checked my mobiles incoming calls list to check the callers number and it was 02 which as you know is Bangkok.

The reason i posted my experience on Thai Visa was to see if anyone else had received the same offer at least then it would remove any suspisions i had.

But alas nothing!!

Hmmm makes you wonder?
