I want to spend a few months teaching English in Thailand. I envisage doing a stay permit run ("a visa run" some would say) ie a trip to nearest border crossing point every month. I have little money, and also, I don't like spending time on buses or trains, especially if they are noisy, shaky, uncomfortable. Therefore I would like to live in a town that is perhaps very near to a border crossing point or perhaps not so near but has a cheap and short and comfortable journey to one.

So could someone give me journey times and prices and an opinion of the comfort of some easy stay permit runs?

Firstly you do realise that you cannot work in Thailand without a work permit dont you? To work without one would be highly illadvisable.........you risk arrest and deportation. Why dont you forget about doing visa runs every month and apply for a single entry tourist visa at the local Thai Embassy/Consulate in your home country this would give you an initial 60 day stay upon arrival which can be extended by 30 days (fee 1900 baht) at local immigration in Thailand.......thereby giving you a total stay of 90 days. Should you wish to stay longer than this simply apply for a double entry tourist visa before leaving home this will give you 180 days stay with 1 border run at the 90 day stage. By the sounds of it you have no offer of work her from a teaching establishment so its pointless going down the Non Immigrant visa route. Regards location............thats really up to you, i/m in Pattaya the border is just over 3 hours away by mini-bus .

Messenger,

I'd definatly agree with what Thaiflyer says on the visa issues, but if your just gonna be here a few months then I wouldn't worry too much about a work permit, I worked here for years without one! English speaking teachers are ALWAYS needed pretty much anywhere, even if you come to Bkk first you can be assigned to a school which is out in the sticks or nearer a border if you want. (just go to SIAM language group, theres loads about and always need teachers)

Saying that, if your on a budget then it will probably be a uncomfy bus ride for a visa run if you don't do the double entry thing, Unless you want to pay some1 to take your passport and do it 4 you, which 1 is a bit dodgy and 2 costs!

Well good luck!

if you wanna teach learn the process of how to work in foreign country, you cannot just walk in and say i want to work, if you gonna be a teacher please be smarter than that, teacher do do homework before coming to class. no need to jump boder if all work permit is in place, for matter of fact by your post i think you are diss-qualify to be a teacher in Thailand, my opinion.

Years ago I sent my Pport with an agent to the immigration office but not the border, got a stamp but screwed my Pport up completly! After several thousand baht under the table at immigration got it sorted! But now have Non-imm visa so thankfully no more visa runs for me!

Don't wanna brush you the wrong way Chingy, but it's my experience here that ANYONE can become a teacher in LOS if they're a native English speaker, can read/write and are prepared to work.

if you insist, i'll be honest with you, with stupit question like this you don't deserve to be a teacher

there's no permit run, go get a permit to work, you think you're working in your home country, (i came, i saw, i have sex, and now i wanna work) duh!
ie a trip to nearest border crossing point every month
trying to be a teacher, maybe he should try to learn how to do research for once, what try to get shortcut by asking here.
I have little money, and also, I don't like spending time on buses or trains, especially if they are noisy, shaky, uncomfortable
my first point, come to Thailand with no money or maybe ran out of money, what the helll are you here anyway, trying to get freebies.

Second point, poor as helll and still don't wanna take bus or train because it uncomfortable, <deleted> do you see any cheaper transportation other than bus or train, maybe tuk-tuk or moto, Oh wait he refer to airport LIMO suite his need.

Therefore I would like to live in a town that is perhaps very near to a border crossing point or perhaps not so near but has a cheap and short and comfortable journey to one.
wanna live near a border for easy access to border run, hello get a work permit and maybe you don't need to do border hoping so often, further more he have no idea what border town he want to be in, and still want to be a teacher, maybe open a map and take a look, know where you want to be and then ask, again trying to get freebies from here.
So could someone give me journey times and prices and an opinion of the comfort of some easy stay permit runs?.

first off i didn't want to be a teacher, my english skill suck, maybe that why i didn't want to be a teacher.

what did he say he wanna be (english teacher), i have no idea what he just said, was that in english, for a minute i thought it was some iraqi or zombia language.

wanna know my suggesstion, go home and get a job, save some cash and do the planning where you wanna be in thailand, and learn how to get a job abroad, learn the system, return in near future with better knowledge, thing would turn out much better, maybe then he can afford a Limo to take him around, and stop hanging around the border for young boy.

(my opology if im too harse) :o

Thanks for telling me it's about three hours by minibus from Pattaya to the border. That is the sort of information I am trying to get right now.

What exactly was was screwed up about your passport? I ask because this information is potentially useful to me, I think.

Urrg! Long boring story, but basically I gave my Pport to a lower rank immigration officer who said he would get me a 3 month stamp (for a price obviously!), well when I got it back it had some wierd stamp saying smthg along the lines of I would be deported/prosecuted if i did not leave the kingdom after the extention of 1 month, the guy promised he would take my Pport again in a couple of weeks and get me the full 3 months I'd paid for. Well he did take my Pport again and nothing had changed, no other stamp or more time but he still wanted to be paid for the extra trip to immigration, aaaaaaanyway lots of arguing later, I didn't pay and my Pport was screwed due to this stamp, soooooo I just never left the kingdom and was an illigal alien for about 2 years, had already met my hubby but never told him, untill one day I said shit! I need this sorted and thank god he knows people here and I got it sorted! (which was V expensive!!) and now were married so I have auto non-imm visa.

The potentially usefull info to you is:-

DO NOT GIVE YOUR PPORT TO ANYONE!!!! :o

I want to spend a few months teaching English in Thailand.

Teaching is a commitment and not a fill-in job like stacking shelves in the local supermarket.

You should not be considering teaching unless you can complete the school year.

You may be able to speak English but can you teach it ?

You should consider both these points out of fairness to your students.

You will need a visa to cross into Cambodia or Laos to renew your Thai visa if you decide to go the dubious way of 30day visas.

You can enter Burma for one day for a small fee at Mai-Sai but you can enter Malaysia without a visa (depending on your nationality).
