Wireless In Bkk

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Have got a Chinese friend who lives in a cheap apartment near the Krung Thep bridge, she does not have wireless in her block, and she has asked me to see the best way about getting wireless. I see that the 7-11 sells wireless cards, but how do you know which one to buy ? Or if there is any network coverage where she lives ?

Many thanks

She could start by doing a survey of wireless access points from her apartment - if she's lucky she may find that there is a commercial access point coverage available in her room, in which case she might be able to buy a card/subscription from the relevant company. There are even some free services around such as True Green, if she's really lucky.

If there is no wifi coverage, then she can probably get wireless internet coverage from her mobile phone company, using her mobile as an EDGE or CDMA modem. Just ring up the service center and ask them to turn the service on, and connect the phone to the laptop via bluetooth / infrared / cable depending on what she has available. Not very fast, but its quite cheap (eg. 200 baht for 40 hours acces a month) and she'll be able to use it anywhere.

Otherwise she'll need to get ADSL in her apartment.
