Bangkok orders destruction of mosquitoes

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok’s municipal officials have ordered the destruction of all mosquito breeding grounds in the city to prevent the spread of serious diseases, like dengue fever.

Health workers in the city’s 50 districts are planning to destroy the mosquitoes in the city and surrounding areas because of the increase in their numbers in recent weeks because of the warmer weather.

Mosquitoes carry several serious diseases, including dengue fever and encephalitis.

An epidemic of these diseases in the city with millions of dwellers would cause enormous problems, the Permanent Secretary for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Khun Ying Nathanon Thavisin, told TNA.

Teams are being sent to spray chemicals throughout the city and destroy the

larvae in drains, small pools and stagnant water.

Local residents have been urged to clean up their back yards to get rid of potential breeding grounds for the mosquitoes and to make sure that the insects cannot lay their eggs in water containers.

This might be OK in the short term, but will never eradicate all of them.

Every garden is a breeding ground... :o
