Skype Up In The Village

Featured Replies

I live in a small village in Chaiyapoom and we have a internet connection through the phone (land) line. Would it be possible to use skype with this type of connection.

Well I don't fully understand your question because you don't mention which type of Internet connection you going to have - Dial-up (which is still available) or an ADSL connection.

With the latter you will likely run a Skype connection without problems. (calls to a PC or a landline/cell phone). With Dial-up you can expect problems but you can chat.

I am guessing you have dial-up and no DSL, so no. You need a faster connection than that. Any cheapest DSL will do.

If you already have the internet connection, why don't you just try it and see?

Even with ADSL Skype can be flaky, at least with overseas calls. I might be better within Thailand though.

Try it

ya, I used Skype for a long time here in Thailand but found that as the price was going up (added connection fee) the quality was going down. I often had to try 3 or 4 times before gettin even adequate line quality, and because of the connection fee, that really ran up the cost of using Skype. I switched over to Yahoo Messenger and found a great improvement -- much cheaper and much better.

BTW, this was all with a TOT basic ADSL package -- dial would not work well, if at all.

Using a dial up connection for Skype you have more chance of platting fog. Even with a 512 ADSL it struggles for voice/video Chatting typing wise OK

Oh, and using Skype within Thailand would be an extremely expensive way to make in-country calls.

Depending on if you can pay for it, yes. Not sure it's possible to set it up in Thailand.

I use Yahoo from Thailand. It's as good as Skype and cheaper for phone out.

You certainly can. I've been calling cell phones and land lines in N.A. for a long time at 1 cent (US) a minute and NO connection fee. In my experience, it works better than Skype and is much cheaper.

For example, a 10-minute call to USA with Skype is 30.8 cents (6.8 connection fee and 2.4 cents a minute), whereas through Yahoo it's 10 cents (0 connection fee and 1 cent a minute).
