Mosquito Repellent

Featured Replies

There is a mosquito repellent that they sell in Tesco Lotus that you plug into a wall socket, it has a light on top and and bottle of liquid on the bottom of it. Does anyone know if they are safe. I have a small child sleeping in the same room as the wife and I.

Probably safe when used for short periods of time, like when on holiday, but sustained exposure over longer periods may not be advisable, especially with a small child.

The electric zappers would probably be better.

I have read that these electric mosquito zappers are completely useless and that the only mosquitoes they kill are those that randomly fly into them. The reason being mozzies, unlike many other insects, are not attracted to blue (or any other kind) of light. Mozzies have evolved to feed (or need for their reproduction) blood from warm-blooded animals (mammals). In order to locate these entities, which don't have lights in them but do give of carbon dioxide, mozzies can sense and are attracted to CO2.

Best bet is to use those plug-in units or I usually give the room a through spray-down with a can of bug-spray and then keep the doors (and windows) closed.
