Gps Navigators For Car In Thailand?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of buying a GPS for my car. Would like to know if anyone who has one here can tell me how good they work here in Thailand both in major cities and rural areas. Also would you recommend a brand and place to buy one and cost. Thanks

I've got a tom tom back in the US, works a treat. They have maps for most places, may have them for Thailand? I'd have a look around Bangkok in one of the big stores.

Try google maps, it gives good results for Thailand where I have tried mainly around Chiang Mai province. The navigtors seem to give very similar results to Google.

I have a Garmin nuvi and am very happy with it up here in Chiang Mai. It isn't perfect, but pretty good considering. I've used it up here in the North, in Bangkok and in the South. The only issue was in Phuket, where it was unaware of the one-way streets, but newer map versions may have fixed the issue.

Garmin used to offer maps for Thailand only, but have now bundled them together with the Malaysia and Singapore maps (increasing the price as well). All relevant info can be found on the Garmin website.

If possible, it is much cheaper to buy a unit in the US than in Thailand. I purchased mine in Bangkok from ESRI for a bit over 20K b. two years ago, now I think they are under 20K b. now. I also believe you can pick them up at Tesco or buy them from auto dealers (rebranded).

I am not sure this is strickly correct, as I just downloaded the Thailand only map from the Garmin website (as the latest update to the one I already have on my Garmin unit).

am pretty happy with my Nokia N82, running Nokia Maps 2. It knows the one-ways in Phuket City, but not the new ones in Patong. In Bangkok it was a bit confused by the tollway and recommended turns suitable for the road one level below. Until now it always took me, where I wanted to go. (For longer trips, bring a car charger with you...) Maps comes with a lot of newer Nokia phones and many of them got a built-in GPS.

You would be well advised to buy a Garmin. Good support is available from Gadgetrend. Maps of Thailand are not available for Tom Tom units.

They have the Nuvi 203 or 205 for 9,900 baht. You can buy Garmins cheaper but then you have to install the Thailand map. Gadgetrend will do that for 4,500 baht.

duplicate post - :)

I can really recommend Garmin: years of experience, excellent hardware or more chance to get maps for other countries. Tom Tom is very popular in Europe and North America but as Gary A said, there are no maps for Thailand.

Right now ESRI announced a new "Garmin Mid Year Promotion" for nuvi - excellent for car navigation (I am absolutely more friend of standalone GPS devices than combine). Now nuvi 205 is in the price of nuvi 203 - 9.900,- THB (with preloaded map of Thailand V.9 - Th/Eng). This models has a tracklog function which enables possibility of tracks record.

Do not what ever you do purchase the Zulex system its absolutley useless it freezes tells you there are roads when there are none and constantly returns to the main menu whilst driving. Had it back to the dealer several times who say there is nothing wrong with it Yeah right . I bought a map!!! :):D

I have used the Garmin 310 and find it to be very good, sometimes it doesn't take you the most direct route which can be irritating but it will get you to your destination which is the important thing. (i have not got the latest map, gonna download tnite)

The nuvi 310 is a really good GPS and has some extras, like Handsfree bluetooth system, but ... :) sometimes there are some problems reported with the flap antenna ;/ Just in case repeating: SOMETIMES. I know some people using this model and they are very happy with it. Personally would go for nuvi 205. For handsfree in a car still prefer my Jabra Bluetooth :D

Moris that is possibly true. But i find that the flap antenna actualy makes it a lot more stable in Bangkoks highrises and such. I tried using a headset but really don't like it so the fact that the 310 does bluetooth is great. each to their own :)

(...) each to their own :D

You must be one of them :D

But "Personally...." :D

Just my curiosity: what makes you believe that the flap antenna "(...) makes it a lot more stable in Bangkoks highrises and such." I am not playing smart on you, jing jing. Have you compared it with other nuvi models?

Nope. just a feeling as it is closer to the windscreen. did try it against a MIO GPS which was crap. the MIO i mean.
