Who Is Boss Hog?

In Interview with Stick Part Deux Hogg says Thailand is no place to bring up kids.....Do you agree??

I think if you are able to live in the area around the International School of Bangkok (ISB) it can be a very good place to raise kids. It is very much like a little America, with Sunday School, little league and all the other suburban stuff.

Just in Thailand.

So what you're saying is that its an area populated by spoilt brats who attend an overpriced school with horrible N American accents? Just the thought of a 'Little America' sends shivers down my spine. Does it have a Nazi overlord just like 'Big America'?

My own opinion would be that anyone who earns a living as a Pimp has little credibility to comment on whether Thailand in general is a suitable place to bring up children - his main concern should be the immediate environment of his business "Empire".

Looking at the number of healthy kids around, I'd say Thailand is pretty adequate for raising kids?

And a little-america like community... I don't really want to go there (the topic) but I'd say such communities are for people who feel seriously out of place in Thailand. Like relatively short term (1-5 year) expats who don't really have something special with Thailand. For those people I suppose they serve a purpose. Other than that... ... ok let's not go there.

To me, in some ways I'd rather my kids grew up in the Thai environment than a Western one. And anyway, isn't one of the biggest factors in a child's education the parents themselves? Parents should encourage their kids to think for themselves, have respect for others, have a good work ethic etc. Yet this Boss Hog bloke is complaining that "8 year-old kids here are cursing their drivers". <deleted>, surely that is down to the parents.

Above all, it depends where you are all going to live in the long term. If that is Thailand, the kids are going to gain a lot by internalizing how Thai society works and how to deal with people and form relationships even if the basic education system is inferior to the West. That can go a ###### of a long way in Thailand and is something that people who grew up outside Thailand can never truly achieve.

Well, of the 20 or so people I know that live there, over half have been in Thailand 10 years or more. To say nothing of the large number of Thai people that live there and participate in many of the community activities.

Without meaning to be insulting, you are referring to a lifestyle you know nothing about except for a very inaccurate stereotype you have read about.

Sorry - Its difficult not to sometimes.

I guess I was reacting against the image of an oasis of Apple Pie, Mom and all the other ideals from the good ole US of A that make me want to puke. If I wanted to live in a sterile environment I'd have chosen somewhere in the 'Land of the Free'. :o
