Favourite And Not So Favourite Place In Los

Hua Hn, back in the early 80s was quiet and uncommercialised.

Now all the old homes in the sea side of the town have become

girly bars.......

A real shame

And round about that time one night I booked into a small guesthouse down by the beach, aware that I was feeling very nauseous with all the signs of food poisoning. I awoke in the morning to find I was directly opposite the squid drying pier....it rapidly became my least favourite place ever but too sick to move.

However once I recovered I fell in love with the place. went back a few years back and felt like crying, ditto Samui and numerous other places.

Favourite places to live must be next to the sea, like in Trat, Krabi, Chumphon or Surat Thani. Best town is Had Yai. Because it is not too crowded, location, easy to go around, not much polluted and surroundings.

Least favourite place is clearly Bangkok. People without obligation, living there voluntary are a mystery to me.

Lately the word Hua Hin has come up a lot on TV. Mostly in a positive way.

Lets get this clear first, I love Thailand. But I thought this place (HH) was way below par.

So I've already made my mind up for the worst place I've visited in LOS.

My favourite, which is a lot more difficult to decide would have to be Pattaya :) only joking.

Ko chang would be my choice.

Whats yours?

Pattaya was good ,the best years ago -<deleted> now :D

My all time bestest place I have been to in LOS is Kanchanaburi !2001 with the future missus Torres,Done all the war memorials ,railway & the river trips so on etc,. Loved the place & would consider living there before I die.

Also enjoyed Ko chang & Hua-hin though wouldn't want to do anything more than spend a weekend in either place now.

Then again I enjoy staying in Kampangphet & getting jiggy with the natives ,can't sup the leaw keaw though :D plenty of time to chill ,sup ice cold chang & be pished 7 times a day :D

How ye doing big man?

Best: The cheap garden centre I found just outside Roi-Et . . . Roi-Et too, lovely town.

Worst: Pattaya. 2nd worst: Jomtien, same, same.

Weston-super-Mare is high up there too. :)

Haha.

I loved Pai for it's simpleness.

And for the south I would say Krabi

I really can't stand the overfilled places of fat tourist, non caring tourist. I love to see culture, not tourist.

Are you fat?? & do you feel like all the other fat fuc_kres are cramping your style ??? :)

Not fat at all, just 78 kilo, and 1,83 meters tall. Just can't stand being on a beach full of people who want to barbeque themselves, lying feet to feet. Just not my thing.

I love BKK

I like Hua Hin, a lot i think..

I'm not a Pattaya Fan.

Not a Phuket Fan

Was only in CM for 2 days but didn't like it.

I like Songkhla

I like Hat Yai

Udon Thani is ok

As is Ubon Ratchathani although i bought a Lacoste Shirt in CW & it turned out to be fake which drove me banana's..

But i'm a Samui Boy & THIS is Home.. :)

Cities aside, my favorite place is on top of Doi Suthep by Chiang Mai.......the Wat there......my least favorite place is any immigration office.

Favourite place - the campsite at Tap Lan National Park during the daytime when all the car campers have buggered off. Is there a better place to dance in the whole world?

Most hated place - Jatujak Park. Stinking hot maze crammed with scamsters trying to offload crap to unsuspecting foreigners. Evil permeates the air.

Reading all the posts ... Pattaya, Phuket, ChiangMai/Rai, HuaHin, Bangkok et al.

Simple: Worst place, anywhere where there are a load of farangs and best place where there are no farangs .... and, no, I am not going to tell you where.

:)

Off the farang trail is best in MHO.

Not sure I have any place I have been to that I really dislike.

Nakhonsawan is OK if somewhat limited in scope - then again many places are after you have been there a while :D

Pattaya is OK for weekend trips and for a change of scene.

Cannot say I rated Phuket that much, but I was not there for long so will reserve judgement on that.

Kho Chang was good but limited too.

BKK has its high and low points. I could never live there it would do my head in.

I forget the names of most places I have been to but most have been pleasant. All in all I find Thailand a pleasant and calm place when away from the hustle and bustle of cities like BKK but also a frustrating place to live because of many limitations, some of those limitations usually brought about by my limited spoken Thai.

"Nakhonsawan is OK"

I go to Nakhon Sawan quite regularly out of necessity, but if I didn't have to, I would never go near the place.

For some reason it's always stiflingly hot.

The traffic is horrendous.

It's difficult to find anywhere to park the car.

Big C Nakhon Sawan, must be he busiest, noisiest, most irritating Big C in the whole country.

The riverside restaurants are ordinary.

Am I missing something?

The heat here is stifling. Must be the hottest plave in Thailand, but you get used to feeling like you are in an oven :D

The something you may be missing are the friendly people. Wherever I go I get Thai people wanting to talk to me. Just for a friendly chat.

Never had any hassle from the BiB to date, they have always been friendly and polite. Even had some Tourist Police invite me to their table for food and a drink and they paid the bill.

In certain venues they like to make sure I am happy - maybe because I am a regular.

Down the markets I rarely get asked to pay more than a Thai for food, clothes etc.

Regularly get offered drinks by Thai men and women Food too when I am out on a night - maybe my 100 kilos makes me look malnourished?? :)

Genuine smiles and helpful people.

Granted it is not everyones cup of tea, but there are worse places to be and I can get in the motor and go away for a few days if I feel a bit hemmed in.

And at times NS does seem more like a village with the gossip and that can be a problem, but I think that is the same in many places where they have few Farang - especially crazy ones like me.

I hope you're joking ??? We went there less than 5 years ago, we ate in one of those house, they have a small family restaurant and a cake shop, my wife told me they also have some cooking class there. It was my dream to buy one of those house when we can afford it.

If people think we're going to tell them where the remaining nice places in Thailand are, so they can built their @*%! girly bars ...

You know what, all those bad news, expats can't afford to stay in Thailand and have to leave ? Actually it's good news !

Take the road (by car or bus) from Thong Pha Phum to Sangklaburi in Kanchanaburi province and stay at the lake in Sangklaburi. This place is stunning, especially in the rainy season.

Or, the Mae Hong Son loop on a motorbike (Dang rentals in Chiang Mai, 250 cc crossers for 700 baht a day) is also absolutely fantatastic. 3 days of curves, jungles, and mountain sceneries. I loved it.

Least favorite is Bangkok because of the pollution.

Favourite place) Bangkok/Cha-Am, sorry can't decide

Least favourite place) Pattaya.

Brigante7.

I'm sorry but I keep on reading about all the pollution in BKK and I have to say, what pollution? I've been there at different times of the year and can't say I've ever noticed it.

There is a HUGE difference if you are comparing living permanently in one area and visiting as a tourist. The beach areas are great as a tourist, but most offer little of anything else.

My least favorite place is Bangkok, but only because of its size. It's just too big and confusing, and the traffic is a nightmare any time of day or night. Bangkok has a lot to offer but reaching any destination can take up to two hours in traffic. It's better now that it has the sky train, but the city is still too big.

The city I love the most is Chiang Mai. It's just the right size and it has a little bit of everything. You can walk across the whole city in an hour, but there's always something new to discover. Being a one language person there are enough English speaking places in Chiang Mai that I can always find what I want without traveling with an interpreter. That is more than I can say for most other medium size Thai cities. Most other Thai cities are boring as spit if you can't speak the Thai language.

Although I enjoy visiting the Pattaya-Jomptien area for a week or so I doubt if I would actually like living there. I can say the same for the city/town of Kanchanaburi, but for a different reason. Kanchanaburi is a lovely place for a visit, but for me it gets a bit boring after a week or so. Maybe if I was married it might be different, but I doubt it. I do love the wilderness areas in the mountains west of Kanchanaburi though. If I lived there I'd probably own a boat to go exploring the big reservoirs.

Of all the beach areas I've visited I like the Krabi area the most. Phuket and Koh Samui are too over priced for what you can get elsewhere much cheaper.

I love home in Ranong, and Pak Phanang in Nakhon Sri Thammerat. The latter when visiting my wife's family.

I hate Bangkok, the pollution, the traffic, and a money drain.

My favorite place is our condo on the beach in Cha Am. The beach is clean the people are friendly and it is not crowded. Most people would not think about stopping in Cha Am when they drive through town. It's the pits. But get to the beach (not the city beach) and it is very nice. Should add that there is zero night life and not a place to party. That is one of the reasons we like it.

Pattaya would top the list of least favorite places in LOS.

Taking things in context, sometimes stumble upon some gems, either a place that is a lot of fun, or fantasticall price, or beautiful, etc.

Best List:

Suan Dusit Hotel in Bangkok, next to the university. Fantastic price, easy walk to DUSIT zoon that was wonderful to walk around. Grean and water.

Skytrain BTS. Great price and servce.

Flipper Lodge, Pattaya. Offseason great price and rooftop pool and in house massage service. tough to beat for short vacation.

Nong Nooch Gardens near Pattaya. Very pretty.

Ruen Thai restaurant, Pattaya. Good menu, musicians and dancers, semi outdoors. Great for a night out. Simple but pretty.

Any movie theater in Pattaya. Good price, and they do not gouge prices on Popcorn and soda as in the USA.

Sukothai ruins, in Sukothai. Easy bus ride from Mo Chit bus station. Very peaceful place.

Sabai Dee or other massage in Pattaya.

Wat Po big buddha hall with the red rug. Nice to sit there.

Worse List:

Traffic as you approach Pattaya, especially if it has rained.

The original post spoke about best/worst place you visited in Thailand.

Then discussion went in many cases on best/worst place to live.

Two completely different things for me.

Best place i visited for the sea Koh Tarutao/Koh Lipe (Koh Petra national park),

worst place i saw Hat Yai, Ranong and Nakhon Pathom (dirtiest places in Thailand?).

But i like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi and most of the places in Thailand because i just love this country (even Pattaya for a couple of days..)

Very happy to live in Phuket anyway, countless beautiful beaches, still very green, if you want there is good nightlife, big enough to accomodate everybody, first class services and good roads.

For the critics of Phuket as an expensive place: either you are very ignorant about the place or you came as a tourist for few days staying in Patong going around in tuk tuk and shopping on beach road. I lived my first year (2006 not in the 70's) on a isolated beach 500m long, only 2 houses ("on" the beach not even "near" it), one was the one i stayed, 7.000 baht/month, only buffaloes and coconut trees and a wonderful sea. House still there and rented...nothing changed up to yesterday.

And i don't tell you where it is because i still go fishing there (i never saw another farang there in 3 years now!) and i like to do it with the locals. You may like it here or not but before you speak about Phuket be informed.

Good post, maichai40. I said pretty much the same thing in the difference between the tourist thing and living somewhere. When you get off the beaten track a bit it can change things dramatically. But, if you don't know the language it's hard to communicate unless you have a Thai partner who can do the translating. Phuket IS a beautiful Island and there are many beaches without the ripoff artists associated with Patpong. I just found as a whole it was more expensive in the English speaking areas.

Been there and took a panoramic photo of it :)

Kanchanaburi Province is still the best place for me as I am a River Man and not a seaman :D
