I live in an apartment building in the Chaweng area. In the area I have in it has always been nice and quiet except of course for the crazy Lakeside parties. Anyway, now the owners of the building decide that an apartment building is not enough, they need to put in a bar with live music directly below me. Where is the thought process here? There are another 20 rooms at least that will be kept sleepless by this and for what, so about 10 people can sit and drink whiskey and listen to bad music? Where is the concern for the paying tenants? I will move out next month and I'm sure others will follow me. No matter how hard I try, there are some things I just can't understand here.

All that will happen when everybody moves out is they will double the price of the drinks in the bar to compensate for the loss of rent. Sorted! :)

A peaceful and quiet place is NOWHERE guaranteed in Thailand. Something nasty could start next to you tomorrow. Relatively noisefree would be a house in the middle of a huge forest area which belongs to you.

You're right to a certain extent, but what about well constructed condos? You can be in the center of Bangkok and if you're in a good building, you close the door and have peace and quiet. Do any apartments like that exist on Samui?

What bothers me almost more than the sound itself is the attitude from the apartment owners here. Basically, they simply don't care that their customer is greatly inconvenienced by them. If I don't like it, I can leave. I am no one to them. At least in the US they would pretend to care.

Most nights, there isn't a single customer, but they leave the music on til 2am regardless. I could go on and on...

That would be a possibility, if you own the top penthouse in a high-rise with no neighbours around and the street constructions and entertainment facilities just tiny points down there.

But it could be, that tomorrow the next building will be destroyed and they gonna build a higher one for the next 4 years.

I believe there is a national law in place that it is ILLEGAL for noise levels go drop below 65dB.

Anybody caught in this too quiet area not making noise is liable to a fine of at least 1million baht. Payable on the spot.

Only areas exempt are temples.

The locals just dont experience noise like westerners. Just go to any expensive Thai place. Its isn't a party unless there is buckets of noise.
