Hi,

there have been a few opinions on the cost of holidaying in Thailand. I went online and did the following 10 minutes of research.

Cost for a family of 2 adults & 2 children (8 year old & 3 year old):-

. Florida Bangkok

Car Hire Economy Two Door £124 £132

Holiday (including flights & accomodation) £2,359 £3,572

Cost of one beer in a bar £2.50 £1.80

Entry fees Crocodile Farm £33 £21

Eating out (per meal at acceptable restaurant) £35 £25

Thailand has great beaches, and few things for the kids to do.

Florida has great beaches, and loads of things for the kids to do.

The cost of a holiday depends on where you are at the moment and what you are looking for.

I'm coming to Thailand in a week's time (from Perth, Australia). Return airfare (inc all taxes and charges) $AUD450 with Air Asia or $AUD500 with Tiger Airways.

Accommodation in Bangkok at 1200 baht a night.

The alternative - Rottnest Island, 20km off the coast of Perth. Okay - it's a one hour boat trip instead of a 7 hour plane trip - but boat and accommodation is $AUD570 for 4 nights.

It's winter in Perth - 6C overnight, around 17C during the day. Bangkok is around 24C overnight and 33C during the day. Add the culture, cheap meals, cheap transport, smiling people, duty free shopping ... why would I bother to holiday in my home country ???

duty free shopping ...

Can you elaborate...the other things I understand but I have never considered Bangkok a destination for "duty free shopping" or consumer shopping of any other sort (except for possibly handicrafts). In fact, the price of most items are higher than the norm in most Western countries.

interesting analysis although it is fair to say that bangkok, being a capital city, isnt a fair comparison for florida, maybe pattaya is?

given you quote in £ i am assuming you are traveling from the uk and using chiang mai as a destination my estimates would be

flights about £2000

good central hotel 2 rooms inc breakfast £700

car, about £20 to £30 per day so dont bother get a taxi/car with driver

beer £1 for a bottle of chang in a bar, not the hotel

meal £5 to £20 per person not inc wine

which everyou pick hope you have a good one

To compair Florida to Thailand is like compairing apples to durians. They are not even close to being the same. :)

Last week I stayed in an impeccably clean room at Sun and Moon Resort in Pattaya for 600 baht per night. Nice pool, fitness room, pleasant staff, quiet, good view. Last time I was in Florida, about 1989, I had a hard time locating a room anywhere near 18 USD/night. Maybe Florida has gotten a lot cheaper with the recent downturn, but I doubt it.

Yes, but the tourist authority in Thailand has repeatedly said it is trying to make itself into a holiday destination for more families. So, to do this, it has to take on places like Florida that have all the theme parks etc.
