นี่ is described as a นิยมสรรพนาม and นี้ is described as นิยมวิเศษณ์ I think you can say that นิยม means defined.

ที่นี่ and ที่นี้ both exist, and are used differently.

I would hold that in ที่นี่, ที่ is a preposition ("at"), and นี่ is a noun ("this place"). Granted, the preposition ที่ comes from the noun ที่ meaning "place, location", but their grammatical roles have become differentiated.

Consider:

เขาอยู่ที่บ้าน

ฉันเก็บไว้ที่รถ

In sentences like these, ที่ is a preposition followed by a noun or noun phrase.

It's easy to find other scenarios in which นี่ means "this place" on its own.

For one:

Q: เธออยู่ไหน (say, in the same house but calling out to find where exactly someone is)

A: อยู่นี่

You can add the preposition ที่ in here ("เธออยู่ที่ไหน", "อยู่ที่นี่") and still have a grammatical sentence. Which parallels exactly the behavior of other noun phrases. For example, you could just as well replace นี่ with บ้าน, with or without ที่, if it were a telephone conversation:

Q: เธออยู่(ที่)ไหน

A: อยู่(ที่)บ้าน

Now contrast that with ที่นี้, which consists of noun ที่ ("place") and demonstrative นี้ ("this").

You tend to see ที่นี้ especially in the phrase ณ ที่นี้ in formal speech and writing. As in:

ขอขอบคุณทุกท่าน ณ ที่นี้

Here, ณ is a preposition ("at"), which is why it is used in conjunction with ที่นี้ (a noun phrase), and not ที่นี่ (a prepositional phrase), which would be a double preposition. And while that's not technically impossible, in this case it would be regarded as incorrect in formal usage, and which explains the grammatical difference between ที่นี่ and ที่นี้.

Yesterday it was all clear, but today I found this sample sentence in my dictionary: นี้คือเครื่องจักรซึ่งมีประโยชน์มากมายหลายอย่าง

Then I looked for "This" and this is the whole entry:

The object is to understand what is meant and abandon the grammar if it doesn't fit. Here นี่ is a pronoun 'this'(house, car,etc) you will know from the context, then ที่ becomes a preposition 'at' but what about ที่นี้? now we have a pronoun first 'here' (house,car,etc) but which one? นี้ = this one. Same, same, for all practical purposes.

As to ตรงนี้ I will take your word for it, ตรง means 'not bent' and is actually an adjective but not to worry, perhaps someone is unsure of the place. The context is everything, talking came before writing. If we tried this stuff with a native speaker I suspect that they would think us mad.

I think you hit the nail on the head again here. I asked two university educated native speakers about this question and they seem to think that the difference between นี่ and นี้ is neither about meaning nor function, just emphasis. They would choose which one to use depending on which one sounds right in each situation. As an example, they said that one normally says มานี่, but มานี้ is also correct, same meaning but more emphatic. When I pressed them to say whether the entry on my dictionary is right or wrong, they said that it is not wrong, but unusual. (ไม่ผิดแต่ไม่นิยม). The distinction between pronoun and adjective, while beautifully simple and useful for us, didn't mean anything for them. หนังสือเล็มนี้ sounds right and is the way people speak (correct); หนังสือเล็มนี่ sounds weird and nobody speaks like this (incorrect).

I fully agree with Khun Zorro that what what is correct in Thai is whatever Thai people actually say and disagree with Geezer who believes that context will save sloppy pronunciation.

Well done David you have managed to find a Thai who does not think us mad. You agree with Zorro, who agrees with me, but do not agree with me.

The way for me to think of it is that if we have ไม้เอก it is a pronoun, and if ไม้โท it is what I call an adjective although it doesn't expand on quality it does specify as Kun whats his name is saying, however I don't drag ไม้เอก into it, neither does my students dictionary. There are cases where the noun may not be apparent and sometimes missed out which is where I think confusion arises. We may need some of your examples to discuss, but to me the difference between จากนี้ and จากนี้ is from here and from this place(house, field etc.) it hasn't nothing to do with sloppy speach merely การสื่อสาร .

If anyone knows how to get out of solid black please let me know.

Oh, by the way you must think of a better way of translating เพืยงไร because I think that there is no extent of distance specified in นั้น โน้น one is ไกล and the other ไกลออกไป differing only in context; golf ball or jetplane.
