bergen Posted June 29, 2009 Share Posted June 29, 2009 Ubon Candle Festival will take place 6. - 7. - 8. of July this year. Khao Phansa or the Buddhist Lent is the traditional time of year for young men to enter the monk hood for the rainy season, and for all monks to station themselves in a monastery for 3 months. In Isaan this is celebrated with a candle festival, and best seen in Ubon Ratchathani. The Festival features a spectacular procession of huge and ornate - carwed wax candles made by local craftsmen. In addition candle artisans representing various countries from around the world will be taking part in The 4th International Wax Sculpture Exhibition, and their work can be seen outside the National Museum near the south west corner of the city park - Tung Si Muang. There will be several markets in and around the park and lots of visitors. All hotels double their room price - and if you're going and haven't booked already - you might struggle to find accomodation. Below are some pics from the 2007 exhibition: We used to go reguarly, but don't have the time now. There has been, for the last couple of years, a similar event staged in Surin. That seems to be growing in stature. Maybe everyones pissed off at the way all the electric cables have to be lifted to let the floats through in Ubon.
