I know this is broad, but how do you compare them. cost of living, things to do, hospitals, safety, thai girlfriends, places to eat?

To give you a simple answer:

Its cheaper in Pattaya, more hospitals , less safety , more thai bargirls , more places to eat, more things to see. And stay away from the polluted beaches.

Population of Pattaya - the city : 650,000

Population of Krabi - the Provence : 340,000

That should give you a pretty good indication of the difference right there. :)

Not trying to be a smart ass (it just comes natural) - I love living in Krabi - but comparing it to Pattaya, you might as well be comparing it to L.A. They're really two different worlds.

How do the rents compare?

Not just bar gils, that are also more Thai boys in Pattaya.

There's a Provence in Krabi? Can I get rose wine as nice as Provence, France?

OP-it depends on what you are after. Pattaya is the sex tourist capital of Thailand. Krabi a lot more peaceful, but maybe boring if you are after "action". Check the Pattaya Forum for the recent beatdown on The Walking Street. Nice thugs there stomping on people who are down. Drunken tourists, ladyboys galore, a recent leter to the Bangkok Post had a guy wanting to take action against the bargirls and ladyboys for assaulting him, when they grabbed his groin and slapped his arse as he walked down the Walking Street. Quite humorous.

Rents will be cheaper in Krabi.

Oh my, I made a spelling mistake!

Thank goodness Huggy was there to correct me.

I will never overcome my shame. :)

Yes, thank goodness. Little did you know that not only is the forum a good place for information, but you can sharpen your English skills at the same time.

All hail Thai Visa !!!

The beach area of Ao Nang is much nicer than Pattaya's beach. The swimming is FAR superior to Pattaya and nicer than Phuket. It's also closer to Koh Phi Phi. There are a few off shore islands that are reasonable and interesting... Hong Island being just one.

Krabi beach near Ao Nang...

By contrast, this is Pattaya's beach

But, if it is the night life you want then Pattaya is far better. There are a number of bars in Krabi town harbour area and Ao Nang tourist beach area, but nowhere near the number of bars as Pattaya. Pattaya also has far more places to eat. Pattaya has at least one good hosptal that I know of, but I don't know about Krabi. I've never needed medical attention in Krabi.

Railey beach is only a short distance from Ao Nang, but takes a short boat ride to get there. It also has accommodation. Railey beach is a lovely spot that has kayaking in ocean caves, rock climbing and scuba diving.

Hong Island makes a nice day trip and it has a small population of monitor lizards...
