Zx-10r - Roads And Registration

Hi all.. My name is Johan and I am a swedish citizen that recently moved to Bangkok. At the moment Im staying here on tourist visa but I will get my non-immigration ED in about 3 weeks due to studies in the thai language. That was a short introduction. Now we'll get to my few questions..

I just bought myself a new ZX-10R from the Kawasaki dealership in Rama 9. They just sent my papers for registration so I will have to wait a couple of weeks for my plate. What I didnt think of was that I dont know how to get "temporary plate". Can anyone tell me how to do? or do I have to wait for the "real" one? (the store is of course closed until thursday.. so i can't ask them)

Can anyone hit me with some examples of roads in the Bkk-area that are both funny and good enough for a 1000cc? Roads that can help me get my daily dose of adrenaline.. (oh well - I guess all roads in Thailand can help me with that:)).. I would also like to know about other big-bike-friendly roads all over central Thailand for longer trips..

Another question.. I dont know about this, but I have heard some rumours about the tollways. Is it illegal for bikes to drive on these? What does the law say? Do they care if you come up to the booth with a 1000cc and want to pay?

I might come up with a few more questions soon but I hope that you can help me with answers to these first!!

Take Care,

Johan

I still (!) have the red plates-temporary-from when I purchased my Ninja 250 last December....no hassles and I've had it all over. Rules are restrictive on the red plates, such as you can't leave the province the plate was issued, you can't drive but certain hours, etc. However, as stated, they haven't hassled me about it.

Tollway usage is strictly verboten. If you're lucky, you might get on, but you'll quickly be escorted off. No two ways about it.

If you want a nice scenic route, heading north is the only option. I always recommend going up the 309/311; interesting stuff up that way. I don't know Bangkok roads that well, but if you're looking for "funny and good enough" you'll either be disappointed or end up killing someone; perhaps yourself.

If you're looking for roads that are fairly empty most of the day when you can use a portion of the zx-10r's power, your best bet is outside the city. Inside Bangkok there's always someone (or a dog) running across the road no matter the hour. Please be safe especially if you're new to driving in LOS and I'd recommend getting a scooter if you don't have much practice on a machine of the calibre you currently have (hel_l, get a scooter anyways and learn the lay of the land; it will teach you about Bangkok's own traffic rules, ebb and flow of its traffic, and if you drop-or worst get sideswiped on a-35000 THB scooter, won't that hurt less than your brand new, very expensive, Kawker..

Congratulations on the new bike! There are no temporary plates for motorcycle in Bangkok- just carry a copy of your insurance and invoice to show the cops if they pull you over. (Better yet- don't stop!)

Really? I've got to get out of the sticks than; either that or demand Kawasaki Nakhon Sawan get me the real plates.... :)

Dave- you forget Kanchanburi to the West, Rayong and Chantaburi to the East and Khao Yai to the North-East- all easy day trips from Bangkok.

Happy Trails!

Tony

East is boring! I haven't been up to the North East, but there are some awesome roads up in my neck....although Kanchanburi has some good rides.

Thanks - the bike is awesome. Haven't been driving it too much yet but I had a zx-10r 2006 in Sweden and I loved it!

Ohh.. this is 100% correct? Are there any restrictions to this? -like I can't take the bike out of Bangkok or something? I haven't received the papers from my insurance company yet but the guy at Kawasaki gave me some sort of "insurance evidence" with frame number, call center number etcetera. (The insurance is of course paid..) Is this enough together with a copy of the invoice?

Wow. I know all the turns and corners around Pattaya, Sattahip and Rayong area.

Easy access from Bangkok. Plenty of pubs for the evenings.

I'll go to Pattaya in a couple of weeks.. Only one problem - Pattaya have this "don't-wanna-stop-party-effect" on me;) So I might not be able to drive around too much :) .

Congrats on the ZX10R.

You should consider the track, to reaps the full benefits of the Ninja.

Thanks Travelmate..

I have had that in my mind. Never used one in Thailand though.. I know one is located in Pattaya - are there any others in the Bkk-surroundings? In that case - which one is best maintained/which would you prefer? Anyone with experiences from these are of course welcome to speak freely..

peace,

Johan

Currently can only advise Bira at the moment. Other tracks will be opening in the future.

Below is a pic of a Ninja in action at Bira.
