Thaksin party at Sanam Luang banned

Red-shirts will not be allowed to hold a birthday party for fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra at Sanam Luang on July 26, Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said on Tuesday.

Even if leaders of the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship submitted a formal request to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration it would not be approved, Mr Sukhumbhand said.

"The law clearly states that Sanam Luang can be used only for royal and state ceremonies, activities of the government and important cultural festivities," the governor said.

The BMA had never allowed any particular group to use the park for personal purposes.

At last common sense is being applied and Thaksins crafty manipulation of the laws and the underminding of the authorities is on this particular event are seemingly curtailed at Sanam Luang

Really good one. :D

Let's see what will those reds come up with next! :)

They should be allowed to have the party, but only if Mr T attends.

Sanam Luang off limits for fugitive politician's birthday bash

Supporters of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not be allowed to hold a planned birthday bash later this month for their hero at Bangkok's Royal Grounds, the capital's governor said Tuesday.

Leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) movement announced last week that they would hold a mass celebration to mark Thaksin's 60th birthday on July 26 at Sanam Luang, or the Royal Grounds, an open space outside the gates of Bangkok's Grand Palace.

But Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said such an event would be illegal.

"The law states that Sanam Luang can be used only for royal and state ceremonies," Sukhumphand said. "The grounds have never been used for a private party before." He said that if the UDD put in a formal request to the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority to use the Royal Grounds for Thaksin's birthday party, it would be rejected.//DPA

I believe they said things like that before :)

Hey great idea.

Or perhaps Taxsin might like to fly the 1 million signatories to his petition to Dubai or wherever to attend the party and get more brainwashed.

More good news for Thaksin and the reds. The people who dislike him the most certainly know how to keep him in the limelight and ensure that he remains as popular as ever with his supporters.

They say that he's in Fiji, probably trying to buy a Rugby team. The million would be a great turn out for the team.

Darn, I was looking forward to the free bottles of beer and lao khao that Thaksin usually provides at his parties/riots.

If he's not allowed to have his own birthday party in Thailand, he should call Sandra Bullock or Mick Jagger and join their party, after all they share the same birth day !

If you want to p:ss off some people ... I'm sure they will when they see the pictures in front of all the hi-so magazines in Bangkok !

Well perhaps they can have it at gov't house. Or maybe at the airport--either one seems to be fair game for large gatherings.

They were originally planning to hold it at Din Daeng, and instead of candles would light a few buses and an LPG tanker. However, Thaksin refused that offer as that's a red shirt Songkhran celebration. He wants something special for his birthday.

Well for something special then it will have to be Suvarnabhumi. According to Kasit, it's great fun and the food and entertainment is great.

They'd have to watch out for explosive projectiles if they they try the same at Don Muang though...

looks like the comparisons between iran and thailand are closing in

Scott, your are a moderator but its clear you are a Thaksin supporter
