Internet Connection Via Mobile Phone?

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to find some info (even asked in a subject specific forum on this site with no luck) on how to get connected without a physical telephone line to my house. I've looked at the DTac site with no luck. I've searched the web with no luck. Can anyone please tell me if this is possible and what I need, or have to do to get a connection?

I have seen Siam Wireless advertised before in the Phuket Gazette.

Here is their website after googling:

http://www.siam-wireless.com/

Or, use blue tooth and connect via GPRS... brrr...

Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out but something in the back of my head says you need to be near a transmitter for wireless communication.

I talked to a computer shop yesterday and they pointed out a device used with GPRS (why do you say"...brrr..."?) but apparently it only works with a laptop. The situation is looking grim for a wireless connection to my desktop computer. But maybe some informed / helpful soul will save the day with a workable scenario.

I use GPRS connected via bluetooth and a Nokia N-Gauge cell phone. General rule is if the cell phone works the connection to the internet will work. To use GPRS you will need to sign up with DTAC or AIS for the package depending on your anticipated useage. I use a package from AIS at 900 odd baht a month that gives me 450 hours of connection time.

To qualify for this type service you have to be on a monthly billing program and to get that service I had to sign up in my wifes name.

It works quite well and beats the modem connections for speed and availibility.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply Wash but could you clarify if this bluetooth thing works with a desktop computer and a regular Nokia cell phone? Also, what's the procedure? You have your account setup, you dial a specific phone number (on your phone) and the bluetooth device somehow receives a signal which is relayed to your computer? Sorry if this sounds too dumb but I just don't know much about this sort of stuff and am having a hard time imagining the interplay between cell phone, computer and whatever device can connect the two.

It works with desktop if you get what is called a Dongle to plug into a USB port somewhere around 1000 baht.

You will have to check on your phone model to see if it is GPRS and Bluetooth capable. Doesn't have to be Nokia.

Procedure is to put cell phone anywhere within 30 feet of the computer and then set up a dialup connection to AIS or DTAC in the same fashion that you would set up any dial up connection. You simply use that connection to connect to the GPRS service which is also ISP. The Bluetooth provides a wirelesss connection to the cellphone and the dialup provides connection to ISP (AIS or DTAC) The software for Blue tooth comes with that device and the details for phone settings come from which ever service you select.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again Wash, and yes, it does help.

Have you experienced any problems with Bluetooth and dropped connections? I ask because someone in another forum mentioned that a USB cable (I'm assuming it is hooked direct to the cell phone but I'm not entirely sure) is better than Bluetooth to ensure a continuous connection. I will be looking for more info on both possibilities.

cheers

I see...wadda ya do when you're cold? Grrr...??? I'm beginning to get the impression the best possible scenario will be a phone that hooks up directly with a USB cable. I started looking at mobile phones with all these bells and whistles on the web but got confused real fast with terms like EDGE, GPRS, SMiRk and WAP ever... I'll get something figgered out sooner or later I guess
