Hi, Thai wife and I moved to Thailand last year.

Wife was married before but her husband passed away.

Her Thai ID has been expired for 24 years and is in the passed away husbands last name.

We are having the HARDEST time getting her a new Thai ID.

1.We have his death papers

2. We have her old Thai ID in her dead husbands name

3.We have her Thai passport updated in my last name.

4. She has her American Passport in my last name.

5.We have our Marriage Certificate notarize.

6. We have her ordinal house registration.

Now they want a marriage license. We called the state we were married

in for the Marriage license. They told us we gave the marriage license to the justice of the peace 15 years ago and he sign the document. "On your wedding day, you gave your chaplain your marriage license, then after the ceremony, he signed it and send it to the proper government agency for validation."

After we received you signed marriage license from the justice of the peace we issue you a Marriage Certificate which is higher on the ladder so to speck then

a marriage license. Marriage licenses are only valid for 90 days anyway.

Seems to me.... having her Thai passport in our name, her American passport in our name, California driver license in our name (I know no big thing but still) a notarize marriage certificate in our name, why would they now want a marriage license which his lower then a marriage notarize certifcate?????? also seems "to me" that a Thai Passport in our name issured by the Thai goverment would be higher on the ladder then the Thai ID and enough proff she is who she says she is...

Any ideas? Would a lawyer help? Maybe our marriage video would help.:) and it was that long ago to be a video....Thanks guys and gals

a lawyer will be expensive and will lengthen the process. be patient positive and polite with the amphur, go along with their suggestions to resolve the problem.

the old thai id should be sufficient for them to reissue the same id number with her new name but they will need to check through the name changes

thai ids do not change but names can and do.

to get my divorce papers completed the amphur had to check through several name changes ( three on one day !!!) . one can see why they and the court were suspicious but itis not illegal to change names.

I am NO expert, but perhaps you are trying to achieve too much in one step. Thai (and many others too) officials like to do stuff step by step particularly if there is no procedure for what you want to do.

How about:-

  1. Get her ID re-issued without changing the name
  2. Change the name to your married name, you'll need some sort of documentary evidence of the change, does her PP contain both names?

Just an idea :)

Thanks guys for you posts. Some good ideas.

Yes, her PP has both names. Infact they staple the old name passport to the her new name passport. Does not look to well having 2 passports stabled to each other but that's the way they do it.

Maybe get the old ID in her old name updated might be one way to go. Just, my O visa is coming do and I wanted to get my retirement visa using the 400k instead of the 800k route.

I was in a catch 22 situation with Thai officials about a traffic ticket (which had been paid but they said it hadn't)

AFter trying 4 times to get the police in Kaen Ken fax it to the police in Phuket, with no luck, finally i asked the official what else i could possibly do?

He made the motion of putting money in his back pocket. 500 baht later, we got exactly what we needed.

good luck.

I was reluctant to suggest the oiling-the-wheels solution. But since our OP has more than sufficient evidence linking the two names and demonstrating that the wife is who she says she is (the updated passport) then I would suggest wifey investigates the possibility of a little lubricating :)

My mother had similar problems, compounded by the fact someone had stolen her actual identity in the 35 odd years she was away from Thailand without an ID.

As other have said, do it one step at a time....

Is your wife still on the tabieen baan (house registry)? If yes, then get the ID issued in that name (likely her maiden name). This is what my mother did.

Then go and change the name, if you want to.

My mother couldn't be arsed, so all her Thai ID, after 37 years of marriage, is still in her maiden name.

I like Samran's suggestion.

I don't think you'll have a problem with immigration, as long as your documents show a trail of different names.

She is no longer required to change her name when she gets married.

When you apply for the extension to your O visa, don't put down 'retirement' as the reason you are applying.

Put something like 'to live with and support your Thai spouse'.

retirement = 800,000

spouse, family etc = 400,000
