Best Age To Spay A Dog?

Featured Replies

Just wondered what peoples views are as to the best age to spay a dog? We have a 4 month old who we plan to have spayed in the next few months but I was reading recently that bigger dogs (ours is a Rottie) can be done as late as 1yr as they mature slower than small dogs. It also mentioned that a spayed dog often grows bigger than a non-spayed dog so it's better to wait as long as possible so that she's almost fully grown before the op if possible.

Thanks.

I thought about 1 Yr was about right, as they are nearly mature then. I had my Whippet in the UK spayed at 1 year.

My local vet will not spay a dog until it is at least 1 year old so I think there is your answer. :)

Rottweilers mature mentally and physically around 2 1/2 years of age.

There are pro's and some serious con's when spaying or neutering a dog at an early age.

I've written an article on my website about this, with several links to other websites: Spaying or neutering - pro's and con's

So if thinking of spaying the dog before she's is 1 year old, I suggest you inform yourself well BEFORE making such an irreversible decision.

Why would you want to spay your rottie at all?

10 days twice a year you have to keep here on a leash walking her, or locked up when not. thats all :)
