Hi Dmax, I've done some volunteer police work over the past few years in both Bangkok and Phuket.

The 'obviously he gets a work permit' isn't quite correct! I know of no volunteer foreign police officer who has managed to get a work permit for this work! I personally tried very hard to do this because - on paper - you do need to have a work permit to do volunteer work. However, it seems that this requirement is brushed aside by your Thai police bosses. 'No need, you work for the police, no need Work Permit etc'. I worry about what could happen if it were ever put to the test.

In any case, it is not the Work Permit that helps you to live in Thailand but your visa. After about 18 months of trying, I was able to obtain a 'stamp' in my passport that granted me stays of 60 days because of my volunteer police work. It was always only 60 days and was renewed at the 'whim' of the boss of Immigration. AFAIK, there were only 3 volunteers who managed to get this stamp.

Being a police volunteer in order to obtain a work permit/visa/police id card etc are not the sort of reasons for wanting to be a volunteer. It should be more on the lines of wanting to help tourists etc etc. (Please, no jokes about lining your pockets, scamming tourists etc!!).

There is no need to have previous police experience in your home country, but a clean criminal record is a must and this will be checked. The ability to speak Thai is usually always cited as a major plus point, (as it should be). But I have met several volunteers who cannot speak a word of Thai - but are learning.

To add to this:

You must be 18 or older

You must have a valid driver's license

if you are merely interested in the work permit i'm afraid that your intentions arent exactly what would qualify you for a volunteer cop. if you really want one though, see what you can do in terms of teaching english to the police officers, i know some people who have acquired a WP that way.

cheers mate but what qualification do you need to teach english?..a tefl course,,what type ?

i am not entirely sure about the qualifications of teaching english but i'm gonna take a guess here. a TEFL certificate is usually accepted (from my experience) with most government teaching positions. there are various schools in and around bangkok that offer such certificates for 140 hours with a cost of about 30,000 - 40,000 baht. but please look that figure up. however, i am not sure about what they are looking for so you may want to inquire with some different govt offices, such as police (not sure how friendly you wanna get with them though...) tourist police and immigration officers.

another option is applying at language schools or those lovely thai cram schools. there's a ton of them at seacon square.

Surely one of the qualifications needed to teach English would be the ability to spell words such as "volunteer". I'd also like to think that any kind of 'security' force personnel had similar aptitude, be they real coppers or plastic fashion police.

I was going to apologise for being pedantic, but then decided against it as I am not actually being pedantic at all.

You also need to look like you are about to collapse with the heat at any moment. It helps if you wheeze a lot too.

Being over sixty, with grey hair helps a lot too. As does being overweight and unfit.

Thats what i see in Pattaya all the times i go up Walking Street !!!!! :)
