^smoking causes cancer for not just the person who smokes it, but for all the people around him sucking in that smoke filled air. Statistically smoking causes more death and medical costs. Anyways needless to say Thai Customs will hammer you for bringing in illegal smokes. You are taking a chance buying them in another country and then trying to bring them into thailand.

not true and nice to see so many people who are so law abiding

the op was posted as a warning to help others be aware of the risk not as a complaint

Well its sad to see some of the comments posted in this topic

I don't know why some people don't make their soap box statements in their own topic

For those who doubted that it was the taxi driver it was the customs officer who said it was the taxi driver who phoned them

For those who think smoking is a dirty filthy habit don't do it and don't forget it is legal

More people die from alcohol abuse, more crime comes from alcohol abuse including murders, drunk drivers causing road deaths, violence from drunks the list is endless

Drinking has a bigger affect on everyday lives and lives of others than smoking ever will

Sad????? This is a discussion forum. Do you have any concept of how a discussion works? Rarely does a discussion start with, "Today we will talk about topic a and topic a only." No, a discussion often wanders back and forth and examines various aspects of a topic. You opened a discussion. It evolved. It's the way people communicate.

All things that are legal are not necessarily good.

So because more people die from alcohol abuse, smoking is good?

Because more people die from drunk drivers, smoking is good?

It's your right to smoke. But you should be aware that, on average, you will die 12 years sooner because of it. And, your medical care with cost all of us.

People say not scammed but rather caught and they are right, in a way. Go to Oz and fail to declare food or something and you get hit with a fine of $220 or so, which they can waive at their discretion. They don't get any of it and thus, there is no reason to persecute people. Contrast that with the Thailand situation. Extracting Bt70k may well be the law but we know the law means little in Thailand. How much actually went into central coffers ? how much paid out as bribes to find out which guy had these cigarettes ? who actually can attest that these pieces of paper we see scanned are actual laws ? why does it never go to court ?

It may be the law but using that as an excuse to attack the guy caught is hardly a waterproof argument in Thailand is it ?

Anybody has been caught with too many bottles of wine ?

What would be the fine for alcohol ?

Wine is so cheap in Laos (Less than half price for bottles that cost 1500 Thb in Thailand) that it's difficult to buy only one or two...

Maybe being French would be a good excuse ?

So some smugglers got busted and fined. Try the same nonsense entering Singapore and see what happens.

You get 1 carton and 1 litre. Ignorance is no excuse.

What do they do ,deport you, Chop your Hands off

or a 5 year jail sentence?

A country will drastic laws for minor offences if ever there was one.

Spot on. Singapore is a draconian, backward, repressive, old-fashioned, unenlightened, primative mostly-islamic fascist country! A real piece of <deleted> trying to pass as a modern country. The only thing somewhat "modern" about Singapore is its material infrastructure... definately not its mentality and society. What a hel_l-hole joke of a country! Backward bunch of extremist fascists... for shizzle. Same can be said for Indo and Malaysia!

Smoking's a dirty, filthy habit anyway.

He should thank the nice customs agent for improving his health.

Picking your nose is a dirty, filthy habit - Smoking is unhealthy and anti-social.. :)

I smoke by the way - only 1-5 a day though when I drink and only in the evening (although that doesn't excuse it)

For the record, I visited Vientiane a few months back, I purchased 200 cigarettes at duty free which I am by now quite certain are fake. Smoking as little as I do I feel quite a rush when I have a cigarette which is one of the reasons I enjoy it. But I get nothing from the cigarettes I purchased from the Duty free shops near the bridge and as a result I am quite certain they are counterfeit.

Amazing, i think that rush will actually be your body wondering what is happening to it, do you sniff glue as well ? It never ceases to amaze, the words that come out of a smokers mouth.

What is "ect"?

short for

Et cetera (in English contexts pronounced /ɛt ˈsɛtərə/) is a Latin expression that means "and other things," or "and so forth." It is taken directly from the Latin expression which literally means "and the rest (of such things)"

Alas, why does the renowned "purveyor of duty items" at Suwannabhumi Airport not operate an outlet at Nong Khai?

The boxes fags could then have been (disputedly) paid for, and on top of the whopping fine imposed by Customs, another hefty fine imposed for charges of shoplifting. :) Opportunity knocks?
