Not good enough to be a MP but OK as a Minister .

"He held a press conference to announce his decision to resign a day after the Election Commission announced its decision to seek a ruling by the Constitution Court to disqualify him and 12 other Democrat MPs for having allegedly violated the charter by having stakes in media firm or companies which have received concessions from the government.

Suthep's resignation as an MP did not affect his Cabinet status as a Cabinet member is not required to be an MP.

He said he resigned so that he could go on working as the deputy prime minisetr instead of having to be suspended from duty had he case been submitted to the Constitution Court.

He insisted that his resignation was not a proof that he had done something wrong but he worried about his works as a deputy prime minister.

Suthep also insisted that he will not resign from the Cabinet.

He said the EC should resign if the Constitution Court later rules that the Democrat MPs did not violate the charter with their share holding."

Suthep resigns as MP

Writer: BangkokPost.com

Published: 17/07/2009 at 04:29 PM Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban has resigned as MP after the Election Commission on Thursday ruled that he and 12 other Democrat MPs have contravened the constitution by holding shares in firms involved with mass media or state contracts.

If the Constitute Court upholds the EC's ruling they will be disqualified.

Mr Suthep said he submitted his resignation to House Speaker Chai Chidchob on Friday afternoon because he felt the EC's ruling was unjustified, but will remain as deputy prime minister.

He said he never thought his possession of shares in IRPC was against the constitution. Moreover, he bought the shares before this constitution came into effect, and the shares had all been sold.

However, Mr Suthep said he had to accept the EC's ruling because, as deputy prime minister in charge of security affairs, he would not have time to the fight the case in the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions.

Mr Suthep said if the Supreme Court ruled otherwise, the EC should show responsibility.

He said he decided to resign as MP on his own without consulting Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is the Democrat Party leader, or other party executives.

Although he himself has resigned, he still wanted the other 12 MPs to fight in court.

Mr Abhisit had earlier said the 13 MPs did not need to resign as their fate has yet to be decided by the Supreme Court.

good, now its kasits turn

How can somebody be a Deputy Prime Minister and serve that function without electoral legitimacy? Presumably, he would become Prime Minister if heaven forbid something happens to Abhisit. Thailand would have an unelected prime Minister. Doesn't Thailand have enough unelected officials with Governing influences. But this is of no concern to the anti-democratic PAD. Isn't this what 'new politics' is all about? Mind you, there is a wonderful sense of uninhibited freedom when one can govern with no accountability to the electorate. Who can blame Mr. Suthep for that.......'O, I forgot...most of that electorate is made up of "intellectually challenged dolts" anyway, so in fact he is doing Thailand a service. Not being accountable to them is a good thing....right?

Getting elected and having a public mandate has not bothered the Dems until now, so why should anything change? Suthep resigning as an MP but still retaining his ministerial job beggars belief, and makes a mockery of Abhisit, who is obviously powerless.

It was only a matter of time before this Dem government came out in their true corrupt colours. They are no better that the TRT that they ousted on the premise of, yes, corruption.

Why compare? The law, or rather the poor excuse of a constitution made by the coupmakers to save their own asses, state that the PM have to be a MP. If Abhisit get sick, he is afterall in the prime age of getting a extreme version of the swine flue, you have Suthep as PM and breaking the constitiution. This government will stay in office damned any consequences and have proven willing to bend and break laws and even spill blood to stay.
