A coffee seller in Siem Reap has been arrested for allegedly coercing underage girls into prostitution as repayment for debts, in a case that has shocked local authorities and prompted renewed calls for vigilance against human trafficking.

Yeop Dina, also known as Meng, 31, was detained on 7 August at his coffee shop in Thlak Andong village, Slak Kram, following complaints from three victims, including a 14-year-old girl and two 16-year-olds—one of whom had no legal guardian. The arrest was carried out by Siem Reap Provincial Military Police in coordination with the Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau.

According to police reports, the suspect lured the girls into renting rooms without upfront payment. When they failed to repay him, he allegedly forced them to engage in sexual acts with customers, threatening to mutilate them if they refused. One victim stated that Dina took a cut of the money earned, sometimes as much as half, leaving the girls with little to nothing.

The abuse reportedly spanned from February 2025 to the time of arrest, with the suspect operating under the guise of a legitimate business. Authorities have since handed the victims over to the Department of Social Affairs for rehabilitation and support.

Prosecutor Meas Chanpiseth is overseeing the case, which is now proceeding through the Siem Reap Provincial Court. The arrest marks a significant step in Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation, though officials warn that more must be done to protect vulnerable youth from predatory practices.

This case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by minors in precarious economic situations, and the urgent need for stronger safeguards and community awareness.
