Lpg On Old Benz

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

Maybe to some it will sound like a perversion, but I'm thinking about getting an old (around 1990) Benz (2.3 Benzin) and get a LPG kit. I've been driving a friend's Toyota Corolla 1.6 on LPG for some time and was stunned by its economy: 100km on 100B (LPG at 11B/kg)!! Sure, the car had no power, but still enough to go at 100 km/h and overtake those 60-80kmh pickups taking a nap on the road. I will be driving mostly overland.

Does anybody have any thoughts specific on the Benz-engine and LPG? Can these old engines cope with the higher temperatures. I plan to get a good LPG kit, and do regular maintenance.

Can I take the LPG kit to another car after let's say 4 years of driving?

welo

^I'm a Benz owner welo but in Australia, where we have a lot of lpg converted cars.

When you say a '90 Benz what model/engine size are we talking about?

I do know that the W126 models seem to go ok on lpg, particularly the 300 se/sels. I have hear the 420 v8s do well on lpg too.

The Benzworld site has lots of discussion on this very subject.

Good luck

Hi Godolphin,

thanks for your reply. I know I should have been more specific, but my post was before I had a look at the car.

This is a 1989 230E 2.3 with automatic transmission.

I can't be more specific about the engine since I've got no clue about cars (well, not enough, trying to educate me..)

I had a look at it today. Well condition is pretty bad, so my friend who is my official counselor in this venture strongly objected.

I am trying to get a overland runner with good fuel economy at a quite limited budget - originally I wanted to go for an 198x BMW 3 series, but the car is just too small on the back row. (I can hardly sit straight, actually touching the roof with my 1,86m). 5 series is said to be more expensive to maintain and is relatively pricey.

I try to figure out what fuel consumption I can expect from the different cars/engines. Maybe the Benz is too heavy anyway. I just hoped I didn't have to go for a boring Japanese car :)

Thanks a lot for your hint on the Benzworld side, will check that out! I am just on my way through the internet to get more

welo
