BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has refuted fresh claims published in The Washington Post that the American CIA operated secret interrogation prisons in Thailand.

Mr Abhisit described the accusations as, “an old story” and “totally groundless, as this government has never resorted to the use of violent means.”

Last Sunday’s edition of The Washington Post carried a lengthy article based on interviews with current and former US government and CIA officials into the interrogation of terrorism suspect Abu Zubaydah.

The article claimed Zubaydah, now aged 38, was sent to a secret CIA prison in Thailand for interrogation after his capture on March 28, 2002, by CIA and FBI agents, in conjunction with Pakistani intelligence services.

Zubaydah, who has more than 35 aliases, is currently in US custody in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a detainee in the war on Terror.

Deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban stressed that the report of a secret prison in Thailand by the newspaper was groundless and he thought it suspicious that the report surfaced during the Asean meeting in Phuket.
