Cobrabiker Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I intend to come to Chiang Rai in August, will stay close to the night market, but I know now is raining season, does it rain all day and night, if it is half day, at least I still have the other half to explore cr, residents please advice. Also. any comments on guesthouses like mae hong son or lotus, is it walking distance to the night market? Also, I will go to Mae Sai, Mae Salong and Chiang Khong, is it raining in these places too?

But it can rain really hard in one place and just a mile down the road its dry and hot and sunny. So u'll never really know. Can't give advice regarding the guesthouses, but do have a friend who owns "Piman Inn" near the old airport (not too far from Nightplaza area). They have good prices (about 500 THB a night), pretty new fitness and swimming pool etc.

It will rain half a day (morning) from Aug 1-13, Aug 14 will be sunny (it's my birthday) and then rain during the afternoons from Aug 15-31. There is a possibility of some wind too during August and I imagine some thunder/lightning too. Mae Sai and Mae Salong will be very wet on odd days (Aug 1,3,5,7 etc) and dry on even days (Aug 2,4,6,8 etc) and it will rain every day in Chiang Khong. Hope this helps.
Cobrabiker Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Thanks for the info tiptip, btw skybluestu, why is it only on odd days in Mae Sai and Mae Salong, you gotta be kidding right? I believe now there are not many tourists or backpackers in CR now because of the rain. I intend to rent a bike to travel around CR, is it a bad choice at this timing, Beginning of August? If so, when will the raining season will over?
villagefarang Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I came across two young Dutch guys at the market near us, the other day. They were on rented small 125s, in cheap Thai rain gear, and having a great time riding all over this region. A map, a phrase book, a finger to point and a hearty sense of adventure. Just go for it and stop worrying. When you start to overheat you may just be praying for some rain to fall.
skybluestu Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 It will definitely rain in August, that's the only thing you can be sure of. Nobody knows when or for how long, some days it will rain all day, some days it will rain in the morning, some days in the afternoon. It might rain, stop, rain, stop, rain, stop and then rain again. You will get wet!

I think GH Mae Hong Son and Lotus both are about 1 km from the Night Bazaar. If you want a nice GH closer I reccomend Ban Bua on Yet Jod St. I am sure you will have a great time here in CR! Edit: Check the Chiang Rai Map in the Pinned Section ! Edited July 22, 2009 by svenivan
Cobrabiker Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Thanks everybody for the info, the weather is just nice for my girl, but not me, might postpone for another 1, 2 months.
Randell Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Monthly Rainfall in Chiang Rai Great chart Lukamar really puts it in perspective Randell
svenivan Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Thanks everybody for the info, the weather is just nice for my girl, but not me, might postpone for another 1, 2 months. OK mr Cobra, your decision! But here is a link so you can follow the weather daily in CR (also in the rest of Thailand). http://www.weather.go.th/en/thailand.php Click on "Northern" and then on "Chiang Rai" . If you then click on "last 24 hours" you can see temperature, rainfall, winddirection/speed etc etc per every 3 hour the last 24 hours. You can also find Weather radars, Sattelite images, Weather maps and all information that is available for you to understand how the weather has been in Chiang Rai! If you like statistics then you can save the info, analyze and find out which week/month that is best for you to visit our province! Hopefully the weatherpattern will be the same next year!! But you must always feel that you are welcome to Chiang Rai!
Cobrabiker Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 Good statistic Lukamar, so August has the heaviest rainfall, well I think I will come in Sept or Oct, again thanks everybody here for the helpful info.
lannaman Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I 'd like to second recommending Ban Bua GH. Right in the centre of things and run by nice people. 300 baht a night, try negotiating month terms. A bit further away next to Wat PraKaew is the Chat House - excellent friendly place, with best value breakfast in town.
