Hi there,

still weighing my options about my next year university study, amongst others im thinking about taking the tourism and hospitality as a major.

Just need some tips, is here anyone who actually does or already finished this program at one of Bangkok's universities?

could you input some details, your experience, etc.?

cheers

Thai's don't know anything about tourism just look at thier industry so I doubt they actually conduct courses on it. If they do then your qualifications from a thai Uni would be worth didly.

Yes they do conduct courses on it.

My wife is up in Sakon studying tourism. She is only in her first year though. The reason for studying at

Sakon, because thats where she is from and the prices are a lot cheaper.

From what I gather, the course only really gets going half way through the first year.

This is when hotels and landmarks are visited by the classes etc...

Don't really know anything else to tell you.

Good luck.

If I was you I would start by thinking what sort of tourism job you want, visit those businesses and ask where they get their staff (& what qualifications they have).

Thailand is turning out thousands of tourism graduates and there are not the jobs available for them - even before the global bust. And I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the jobs to appear either.

Think about it ... most tourism (or tourism dependant) businesses are small - mum+dad+kid and maybe a cleaner, maybe casual staff in peak times. There is no middle management here, and management is usually the owner. Now turn to bigger tourism businesses like hotel chains .... more staff sure but mostly have worked up the ranks. A few of the very biggest might have some interns or management trainee intakes, but I would say not a lot.

If you want to stick with tourism then I would say choose a niche area or even a specific company and choose your course to align with that - possibly even a part-time course that would dovetail in with the job. It really is pointless to commit to a multi-year course nowadays and just come out and find you have to drive a minibus... or unemployed and watching VCD's

Nonetheless, a formal education and practice within this discipline can easily open doors to more independent ventures. One doesn't necessarily have to play the game.

Is this the place where you are taught to scam and cheat tourists. They actually have a university degree for scamming that is amazing.

It sounds like something has happened to you in the past.
