ASEAN to be a “Community of Action” by 2015

By John Le Fevre

PHUKET (thaivisa.com): -- By the year 2015 the Association of Southeast Asian Countries (Asean), must have come a “community of action and connectivity if it is to achieve its full economic potential”.

Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva told visiting heads of state attending the 42nd Asean conference in Phuket, that by 2015 Asean must be able to act decisively and in a timely manner to address both internal and external threats and challenges to the security and welfare of its member-states and people.

In addition to showing the world that Asean is ready to meet any challenge, the movement of goods, people, investment and initiatives, throughout the region must be obstacle free by then.

To facilitate this, region-wide transportation links must be in place and user-friendly, and there should be harmonization of relevant rules and regulations governing region-wide transportation, trade, and investment.

The Asean community of 2015 should also be a “community of the people,” providing equitable human development opportunities by promoting and investing in education, life-long learning and other capacity-building efforts.

Mr Abhisit said that regional integration would succeed only if the people of Asean contributed to it, and benefit from it, while globalization will be beneficial only if the people in the region were competitive, prepared, and able to take advantage of it.

Failure to achieve these goals, or to encourage the people of Asean to become a driving force for them and beneficiary of them, will prevent Asean from becoming self-sustaining, the PM warned.

A good start would be to send in Chuck Norris to assassinate the Burmese junta leadership. I'll kick in some money to hire his services.

A lot of wishfull thinking : it's impossible in such a short time-span.

BUT, it is now on the table, by the PM from a major country in the Asean, and THAT is a good start. It's also a good way to put the pressure on Burma, smooth Thai style.

I just wonder how to link this statement with the "temple situation" with Cambodia. Unconditionnal surrender by Cambodia ? :)

As Chuck can't raise the energy for a god action flick anymore, do you really think he is up to a real life enterprise? Heard that Boy George is looking at all offers though.
