The same go's for first pressings of LP Vinyl records. 250 Euro are no exceptions. Some shops in BKK who sell old LP's for a few Baht, don't realize the fortune they are sitting on (sometimes).

henryalleman, which LPs do you listen most ?

Sorry, just noticed this thread has already been moved. THANKS mods.

Henry, yes you are right, I did misunderstand. I also agree with what you said about turntables and the warmth from them.

I guess its horses for courses, some people will be happy with a 5,000 baht boom box and others will want something with a little more finesse, everyone is different & I can appreciate most stuff but am definately bias towards pure and simple hi fi stuff.

Henry, I recently viewed some new NAD gear and was a little diappointed at it. I will proabably NOT go for KEF speakers again, although I had no particular complaint with them, however, I will go slightly more upmarket. I would probably like to bring my intergrated NAD amp here if I decide to set up a system here, that would allow me to get a new cd player, turntable and speakers and wait a while before i upgraded my amp for a pre and power set of units. I will never part with this NAD, as I can always have a system in the bedroom.

Im stoked we have some good experience here at thai visa, we have all sorts of punters from sound engineers elektrified, to other guys who write in other sound forums (sorry forgot who that is and just about everyone in between.

Keep the ideas rolling in and SOUNDMAN may finally cruise into the room and realise hes got some work to do. Hopefully we can keep the abuse and petty arguments out of this area and show a bit of respect to each others opinions etc.

I really don't have any wealth of knowledge to add, as Im only a hack, but am keen to hear ur stories, view ur systems and most importantly find out whats on offer here in Thailand.

To be honest, I doubt the LP's sitting in BKK shops are worth too much unless they are 1st (or close to) pressings from the country of origin e.g. Beatles, Stones, Floyd vinyl from the UK. To fetch decent money, they're going to have to have the right stamper codes in the run-off area and be in top condition as well, both sleeve and vinyl. Local pressings aren't going to be great, done using copy tapes of the master and poor quality vinyl. I would also have thought the climate in Thailand would not be kind to records over the long term unless it was stored in an air-conditioned environment - mould could be an issue (although there is a product called Bugtussel Vinyl-Zyme that can deal with this).

The Japanese have and still do make some amazing hi-fi btw. Nakamich Dragon/CR7E tape decks were the dogs <deleted> and still go for substantial cash and they even made a self-adjusting turntable to cater for off-centre pressings! Marantz and Esoteric amongst others make some very tasty high-end digital spinners nowadays and in the field of headphones, products like the Stax Omega's, Sony Qualia/MDR-10 etc. are legendary. I could go on...

Quad speakers are awesome (if you can get past the lack of bass) but not that uncommon in the UK really. Here (UK), the recommendation is to try and buy them reasonably cheap second-hand and get them refurbished by a specialist.

Cheers :)
