It's easy to a broad band speed test on Thai Visa. Just go to the home page and you'll see the broadband speed test link in the left hand column.

Can people with basic home internet packages say 2mb or below, please print test results on this thread ?.

It will allow good comparisons to be made and avoid ill fated switches.

My own interest is to see if my own shared internet line in a luxury apartment is truly as bad as I think it is.

I'll publish my own as soon as my line recovers enough to do the test.

Here it is- fastest ever! yet the pages don't download quickly, and sometimes my internet is totally unusable.

Last Result:

Download Speed: 1115 kbps (139.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 64 kbps (8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 807 ms

In North Pattaya (Naklua) I'm paying CAT for a premium 2Mbps package. The actual average international speed is maybe 256Kbps, at times I cannot reliabily stream a 128kbps internet radio station. Of course CAT thinks this is perfectly acceptable.

Edit: Speedtest to server in Austin, Texas - 0.47 Mb/s download speed and 1087 ms ping time. Just blazing along.

Trust you will get response if you mention your provider (ISP) and place of residence.

I'm on a 4gig internet hotspot TRUE/TOT lan- Fortune Town area, Bangkok. My room gets TOT only. It's an 8 storey modern apartment block and as far as I can tell 100-150 names are on the internet list. At the weekends the service is truly bad.

I also have a basic package with TOT in Surat Thani which is quite good. The only problem is it can drop for an hour or so.

Impressive.

I usually max out around 1780 kbps (or 85% of line speed) on my 2mbit connection. However, with some tweaking, I can achieve up to 1900 kbps downstream but that's really pushing it...

Keep in mind that my last speedtest to Amsterdam is to the Amsterdam Internet Exchange ... the worlds biggest exchange of internet traffic throughput! So that is extremely poor!

The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) is an Internet exchange point situated in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. AMS-IX is a fast growing, non-profit, neutral and independent peering point. The AMS-IX is the largest Internet Exchange in the world, when measured by average throughput.

CAT EVDO, Loei - This is actually a poor indication of service quality since the service is up, down, on and off regularly.

'up, down, on and off regularly' - that's a very simple yet telling phrase.

I used to have CAT here in Pattaya.

Brutal and absolutely no hope ever, apparently they don't even have a CEO...

Even their office with about 20 desks as an internet cafe that used to be always full at 20 baht per hour is now totally deserted, not a single client, I know because it tried it for fun.

They have a sign for 10 megs in front of the office but the true speed is about 500 kbps, I asked for a refund for my lousy 20 baht and they actually gave it to me! This is how bad they know they are.

Go with Maxnet Indy 5 megs.

But actually slow this morning should get about 4.5 megs international usually.

Hi Gary. I'm still in Colorado US. I hope to make my move to Thailand by year's end. I will be living in a rural area SW of Chaiyaphum. I have no idea what my fiance's IP service is, nor her speed data. Mine here is very close to your results on the speed test: 411/144 kbps and L-P 79ms. I will need a fairly reliable and steady service for online stock trading. Any idea about satellite service availability and cost?

When I was over there 1.5yr ago I was getting impressing speed at the internet cafes, most everywhere!

Cheers,

William

That is truly bad. My speeds remain at a stubborn 8 and 8- not quite what I expected from a 4mb service.

I think there was a communication problem. When they said 4b I assumed they meant per room, not the whole apartment block!.

I suffered with Ipstar (Crapstar) for four years. It was an absolutely pathetic service. I was finally disgusted enough to have it taken out. At that point I had no other option except EDGE and my cell phone. By switching back and forth between AIS and Dtac, I got by much better than with the Crapstar satellite dish.

I am now using CAT EVDO and when it works, it is quite good. The past few months the service has been getting worse. I suspect it now has too many customers. Choose carefully where you live and if you have a telephone land line you may get decent service. I have no land line and none is available.

That's ideal in my view. A good balance between price and quality. Even if there were more bandwith, I doubt it could be utilised.

Usually it's about 2.3 MB down, today is a bit better than average.
