My internet connection is incredibly slow, with some pages taking an age to load, especially Thai Visa. I ran a speed test on speedtest.net and got the following results:

Download: 2.64mb/s

Upload: 0.42mb/s

Ping: 44mS

IPS: Maxnet Internet Service 3.5/5

This seems like it should be a good connection. So what could me problem be?

Youtube will not do anything for me once opened, and many other sites just seem to die after a few pages.

Any ideas?

Only option really is to move to another country :)

There are posts like these every day on the forum, so generally you can just say that the internet in this country isn't good as it could be.

And you can rest asure that you are not alone with your slow internet.

My guess is that your speedtest was made to the Bangkok server? Because most internet connections are doing fine as long as you stay inside Thailand, but outside Thailand they are really slow. Youtube is outside Thailand, I don't know if Thaivisa is actually but surely someone else can verify that.

I believe TV's servers are in Singapore.

The speedtest you did appears to be in Thailand. Did you do one or two to other servers around the world?

Here is a random test I just did to 3 places as shown.

I live in Phala Beach near you and have a TOT line with the 2mb package. My system works well. Slow on busy nights.

I use TRUE, and for the last few days my connection, which is usually not too good, has gotten much worse. Lots of times I just give up and disconnect and try later.

It's terribly frustrating. And from the first response, it appears there's nothing to do to fix it. TIT :)

Here is some info that may help you to understand the problem and take action to solve it. Part of my job as a PC technician in Samui involves setting up adsl connections for my clients.

Sometimes, this includes liaising with TOT or TTT to arrange for the line at my client's address. I speak fluent Thai and effectively communicate with office workers and technicians.

From my experience, TOT has very poor internet and customer service, period. TTT (Maxnet) is a lot better and the staff try harder to please. We don't have True.

Try to change your ISP to Maxnet if at all possible.

The standard (cheapest) packages from both providers in Samui is shared by many, many subscribers and is optimized for use within Thailand. Think about it from a Thai business point of view.

Most Thais do not read English very well and so prefer to browse Thai language sites (within Thailand). They also have a lower budget than most Farangs.

The ISPs advice to me is always to use the premier packages on offer if you will surf outside Thailand.

Therefore, upgrade from the standard package (TTT = Indy) to the Premier service and you'll be glad you did.

I pay around 2K/month for TTT Maxnet premier and get (allegedly, lol) 4ooo kbps down & 1000 kbps up. Actually 3500 down & 600 up using http://speedtest.adslthailand.com/

My line is fast and stable and I play online games hosted in Bkk, S'pore, Taiwan, Korea, etc.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I've heard about the internal connection to Thai websites being better.

I installed and ran some anti-virus software (AVG8.5) and removed two virus's and many other problems. The machine is now running much better, so hopefully that was the problem.

Thanks.

This solved my problem at many slow sites.

I know sites like TV needs ads to support it,  but I ran a test because it was one of the slowest.  The site now snaps open and works great with complete ad block and before I could sometimes never even open a page.  I use an ad block list from a text file.  Most time it seemed to be google stuff which is mostly blocked now and site works great again.  It was not even an ISP issue.  Its just some of the ad sites get slow thats the problem I had with the  TV site, not sure they really need like 25 links per page.  I only see a few flash in my status bar now and if I get a slow one where the page hangs like it did before, I find it and add it to the list and site starts working again.

If all these ads sites are not going to work proper dump them they slow everyones internet and they should be band as spam and malware.

Its our bandwidth they are using and it may even add up to more then email spam because its getting worse everywhere on the net.

I am not talking about the ads that are content on the page its all the dumb call home links in the source code of the pages that are hanging it up.

Like this is one of the worst:  */adsense_*  You have to wait for it to contect home before the page will cont. to load and sometimes its really slow.  X25 and you got a big problem.  :)
