Perhaps you are not clear on what unlocking means. It is modifying the firmware/software (aka hacking) of an Apple device in effect jumping into the DMCA copyright laws (yes I know, that is US based laws). A recent modification effective until November of the DMCA law does seem to allow unlocking for "personal use" only and not for resell or profit. There so far has been no direct litigation against individuals but there is a lot of noise being made regarding companies attempting to sell methods to unlock the phone.

"Well, the truth of the matter is that unlocking your iPhone probably isn't going to get you in any trouble, as long you're only doing it for your personal benefit. If that's what you intend to do, go right ahead. Just be aware of the risks, and keep in mind that you've probably hosed your warranty, and that Apple might well stop supporting your phone." Basically, one can not make a sweeping statement that covers all scenarios in this highly debated subject. Also, posting the methods to unlocking or links to sites showing how to unlock can put Thaivisa at risk and as such request to not post them here.

Personally I think it's completely out of order for Apple to lock it's phones in the first place and monopolise the application industry.

I will never buy one while this continues. These phones are also sold at a large markup considering they cost less than $180 to manufacture.

If Apple doesn't want me to use the iphone, that's an easy decision for me. Why would I buy a product that won't work out of the box? They can keep ALL their proprietary products.
