Thai police target car thieves with new website

By John Le Fevre

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- An initiative by the Metropolitan Police Bureau's (MPB) Anti-Auto Theft Centre (AATC) is hoped to reduce the number of people duped into buying stolen cars each year and also aid in the recovery rate.

The initiative is in the form of a new website, www.mpblostcar.com, which enables prospective motor car purchasers to check the ownership status of a car they may be interested in purchasing by entering the licenceplate, chassis or engine serial numbers online.

People unlucky enough to have their car stolen will also be able to enter the vehicle details and the MPBAATC will be able to access the information and merge the information with their own records.

The new website will also contain police news on car theft gang operations, as well as details on people and businesses involved in the car theft and rebirthing industries.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Atthaphorn Suriyalert said the MPBs own database of stolen vehicles will soon be added to the site, as well as to a supporting site, www.rodthai.com.

While the www.mpblostcar.com website is only available in Thai language, the www.rodthai.com website, which contains information such as vehicle purchase prices, the current cost of fuel, and information on insurance parts suppliers, has both Thai and English language content.

Lieutenant Colonel Atthaphorn said AATC will also be training an additional 700 police on new techniques to combat motor vehicle theft, which currently number around 7,000 each year.

long overdue and about time.

long overdue and about time.

I have learned to wait to see if anything actually is implemented before believe that Thai police actually do something to uphold the law. So let’s wait and see before I say about time :)
