Sondhi shooting suspect sues police

By John Le Fevre

BANGKOK (thaivisa.com): -- A non-commissioned Army officer wanted over the attempted assassination of core People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leader Sondhi Limthongkul has filed a lawsuit against the case’s chief investigator, and the deputy national police chief.

Banyat Chiyen, a lawyer representing fugitive Sergeant Major Panya Srihera from the army Special Warfare Centre (SWC) at Lop Buri, yesterday filed a complaint in the Criminal Court accusing deputy national police chief, Police General Thani Somboonsap, and the head of the investigation team, Police Colonel Vicharnwat Bhodirakkul, of malfeasance.

The writ accuses the two senior police officers of filing false charges against Sergeant Major Panya, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued for him and his dismissal from the Army.

Banyat said that Sergeant Major Panya told him when they met two weeks ago he will surrender to police before the first court hearing, but cited fears for his safety and unfair treatment for his delay.

When informed of the court filing by Sergeant Major Panya, assistant national police chief, Police Lieutenant General Assawin Kwanmuang, said the investigation team has found clear evidence that Sergeant Major Panya was involved in the attempted killing of Mr Sondhi.

The Criminal Court accepted the filing and scheduled the first hearing for October 5.

On April 17 gunmen with semi-automatic weapons opened fire on the car in which Mr Sondhi was travelling on his way to the ASTV television station to host his morning talk show.

Mr Sondhi suffered head injuries but survived the fusillade of bullets, while his driver ended up in hospital in critical condition.

On July 14 the Criminal Court approved the issue of arrest warrants for Sergeant Major Panya and former Police Captain Weerawut Mungsanti from the police Narcotics Suppression Bureau, however neither have been taken into custody yet, despite both promising to surrender to police several weeks ago.
